Time to come home.  I was complaining because it was so hot and humid during our time in Miami but I knew we were coming home to below freezing temps and snow.  I was ready to get home, out of the heat, and to my family, but not ready for the cold that was about to greet us.

I messed up when I got our rental car for the week.  I thought our departure was 11:50 AM.  It was actually 1:50 AM.  I had the car until 10 AM and I couldn’t extend it a few hours without paying for another full day.  That means we had to get to the airport way too early.

The Miami airport is pretty big and it takes a while to get the car checked in, take the shuttle to the terminal, get checked in and get through security…but it doesn’t four hours.  I had to check in at the ticket counter because I have special baggage with a special rate and we were still through TSA before 11.

I had to go get souvenirs for the kids so we kind of went our own way for a while before boarding.  Co-Worker went to look for a place to nap while I hunted down some overpriced “Miami” t-shirts.

There weren’t a lot of food options at the airport which I found pretty disappointing.  I was planning on sitting down somewhere and eating a burger with a beer or two while we waited.  I didn’t really run across anything like that while I was walking around.

I eventually found a pizza place and decided that was probably the best I was going to do in this terminal.

Famous Famiglia Pizzeria is between the H and J concourse in what they call the “Connector” in the south terminal at the Miami International Airport.  The pizza place is part of a little food court area that also has a McDonalds, Gilbert’s Food Bar, and La Pausa…which actually would have worked as a sit down place if I really wanted to go that way.  There are a couple of other restaurants in the area but they were all closed.

Famous Famiglia Pizzeria is a chain of pizza by the slice places with locations mostly in airports and shopping mall food courts across the country. The pizzas are all pre-made and sitting under heat lamps. When ordered, they’re put back in to the pizza oven to warm back up.

I ordered two slices of pepperoni pizza and an order of garlic knots. I knew it was going to be a long travel day with a quick connection in Washington DC, so I made sure to get enough to eat before I got on the plane in Miami.

The cost was just under $20 but I didn’t get a drink. I had grabbed a bottle of Pepsi from one of the nearby gift shops after I bought stuff for my kids.

It only took a couple of minutes for the pizza to be heated back up and boxed up. I grabbed the boxes and headed over to a nearby table to eat. It was still pretty early in the day so there weren’t many people in the food court eating yet.

I started with the garlic knots. I got six pieces of bread covered liberally with a buttery-garlic sauce and topped with a sprinkle of cheese. The knots came with marinara for dipping. I used about half of it. The Garlic Knots were nice and garlicky and really didn’t need the sauce.

The pizza was pretty typical for mall food court pizza. The slices were large and they had that sitting under a heat lamp taste. I had no qualms about scarfing down either slice. This isn’t gourmet pizza but it is solidly good pizza. I used to love the mall pizza places when I was a teenager and being a “mallrat” was cool. I’d go get pizza then head to the movie theatre for a matinee.

The thing I always say about places like this that seems to make people angry is, it is what it is. It’s solid pizza. It’s a quick lunch….but it’s an airport food court. It’s a little pricey but you expect that when you decide to eat at the airport so it’s not really something to complain about.
