It’s not often I get sent out on my own during the day anymore at work.

I used to really take advantage of that and take my time doing tasks and search for someplace to eat in whatever area of Michigan I was sent to.

My colleague took a PTO day a couple of days ago and that meant I got sent out to do a task on my own. A Grand Rapids colleague was driving down to meet me later in the day but not before I had time to get lunch.

I was in the Battle Creek area after I finished my task and as I was waiting for the other colleague to make her way down from up north. It was lunch time and there was a sandwich shop that I had been hearing about for a while. It was time to check it out.

3 Sisters Sandwich Company is on Capital Avenue and McKinley Avenue on the northeast side of Battle Creek. The restaurant shares a building with Froggy’s Depot. This spot on the Eastern part of the building hasn’t really been anything for a while. It was previously used as part of Froggy’s Depot when that business was more than a vape shop. Before that, it sat empty and boarded up for several years. This deli is a definite glow up and makes use of a highly visible building on a very busy road

The building is very close to that very busy Capital Avenue so there is no parking in font. There is a pretty large parking lot in the back and there is a door to enter the building from that parking lot.

The restaurant is set up like a typical deli. There is a large kitchen space in the middle of the store with an order counter back towards the door closest to Capital Avenue. There are paper menus on the counter there next to racks with chips and another with board games.

There are is a small dining room between the order counter and the front of the building. The space has kind of a relaxing feeling which contrasts to the hustle and bustle right out those large windows that let in a lot of natural light. The furniture is all solid dining room furniture and nothing feels cheap. There was some thought and care put in to the design to give the space a calming feeling and a good place to sit and eat a sandwich.

The menu is, as the name implies, sandwiches. They also do some wraps and salads but it’s all fairly light fare. Nothing heavy and greasy and there are no deep fryers.

The sandwich I picked was the Big Boss Italian. I got the 12 inch which comes cut in half. Each side has smoked ham, capicola, salami, Italian sausage, pepperoni, mozzarella, mayo, banana peppers, Italian herbs, hot honey, lettuce and tomato. The sandwich is sent through the oven so it comes out a toasted grinder

This sandwich is packed with meat and veggies. The hot honey gives it a really good sweetness and just a hint of spiciness. If I were to order this sandwich again, I would do it without the mayo. I wasn’t thinking when I ordered this time and after I realized I forgot to to do it, my hope was it would be light mayo. It was not. The mayo kind of dominates too much of the flavor when there’s so much else going on. I’ve made it clear over the years I’m not a fan of mayo so that could factor in to my opinion of this sandwich. Outside of that, the sandwich was delicious. There was so much meat and I loved the little chunks of Italian sausage in each bite. This is always the type of sandwich I’m looking for when I got looking for lunch.

The cost for the sandwich was right around $15 which included a side. I chose the Miss Vickies chips but they have other options.

I was kind of excited when I heard about this place opening up because every town needs more deli options. This stretch of Capital not too far from downtown Battle Creek has a wing joint across the street and a BBQ joint about a block away. Other than that, there’s not a lot of food or retail here. 3 Sisters Sandwich Company is a great addition to this neighborhood and they’re cranking out tasty sandwiches.
