It’s been a while since I’ve gotten an assignment deep in Allegan County. Our Grand Rapids office handles those most of the time but last week, I was sent to meet a Grand Rapids colleague near Hamilton for an assignment.

I left pretty early and took my time. I made a stop in Plainwell to run a couple errands then headed towards Allegan where I washed my car then went looking for lunch.

There are some breweries I’d really like to try in Allegan but I wanted to save those until a time when I could actually enjoy a beer or two…can’t really do that while I’m on the clock.

I picked On The Grid near the intersection of Hubbard and Water Street in downtown Allegan. The restaurant has been an Allegan staple for many years but was taken over by new owners within the last two.

The building is pretty simple but it’s a lot large inside than it appears from the outside. There are two large levels of seating and even with the current dine-in restrictions, they have room for a lot of tables. The decor is pretty simple and kind of bland. There’s a nice aged brick wall on one end but most walls are painted neutral colors and decorations, other than a few TV’s, are pretty sparse.

I put in an order for a Bacon Cheeseburger and Fries. I walked in and headed towards the lunch counter off to one side. A waitress asked if I was the to-go order. I said I was and paid the $10 bill with my credit card before heading back to the car to eat.

The food from On The Grid is pretty simple diner food. The burger appeared to be a frozen patty with American cheese and bacon on a pretty standard white bun. I was hungry at the time and this burger solved that dilemma. Sometimes you just want a simple, tasty burger that’s not overshadowed by a ton of toppings and that’s exactly what I got with this one.

The fries also appeared to be the frozen kind but they’re more of a skin type fry. They were really crispy on the outside and much better than the typical crinkle cut diner fries. A little salt makes everything better and that was true for this meal as well.

On The Grid is a pretty simple diner serving up a large menu of pretty simple diner foods. Diners like this usually have longevity in a community because you always know what you’re going to get and it’s always going to be good. This place reminds me so much of a small town diner I used to eat at everyday when I worked summers with the maintenance staff at my school district. It’s not blow your mind food but it’s delicious, quick, and the price is right.
