Usually when we travel for competitions, I have a list of places I’m itching to eat at in whatever city we’re in.

That was true last week when we were in Ann Arbor but I wasn’t feeling great most of the day and wasn’t hungry.

I started the day with breakfast from BO’s Bagels but that was the only time I ate all day. I did my usual Dad Dash thing and ran to Tropical Smoothie and Panera Bread for J and the kids but I wasn’t really hungry when I left.

I had just kind of planned on grabbing something at CD Top Shelf inside the Biggby Coffee Ice Cube – Ann Arbor but they didn’t open until it was almost time to go. I noticed the lights on in the bar as I went in to Stadium Rink to watch B’s final skate of the weekend.

It was Friday night so I was also kind of craving pizza. I looked up some spots in Ann Arbor and almost ordered but then remembered I was going to be driving home through Battle Creek. There’s a pizza place in Emmett Township that I’ve been wanting to order from.

Yeti Pie is on East Michigan Avenue west of Vernon Avenue in Emmett Township east of Battle Creek proper. The small pizzeria is in the Lakeside Center shopping plaza. It looks like this particular spot has been empty for quite some time before Yeti Pie moved in. The last business I can find there is a children’s dentist back in 2019.

Yeti Pie doesn’t have online ordering so I called in an order as I was approaching Jackson. They only do 10×14 Detroit style pizzas . I ordered The Beast Feast pizza and a half order of Snowballs. The cost was around $34 before tip and I paid once I got to the store.

The shop is a carry-out only set up. There’s an counter a few feet inside the door with the kitchen out in the open behind it. A typical pizzeria setup. There’s not much decor as you’re not meant to stay inside very long.

The thing that caught my eye though was the foosball table right in the middle of the waiting area. There’s no place to sit and eat but if you’re waiting for your order, you can play a game of foosball to kill some time.

My order was ready when I got there. I paid the bill then grabbed the box. I ordered two things so I was a little confused why I only got one box until the cashier opened it up and all of the food was inside. It’s a Detroit style pizza so it doesn’t take up a whole regular square pizza box. There was just enough room for the bread balls to be lined up inside.

I grabbed one of the Snowballs first when I got to the car. These are just bread balls with a Parmesan cheese dusting on top. They’re really light and airy for being such a thick piece of bread. They were tasty on their own but I really liked the pizza sauce that came with them. It was really tangy and slightly sweet. I always order bread for L but I don’t think she ended up eating any of these. I ate a couple, J had a couple, then I ate the rest over the next two days for snacks.

The pizza was massive. The box felt like it weighed ten pounds when I picked it up. It’s a standard Detroit style 10×14 pizza cut in to strips instead of squares. The Beast Feast is all the meats….pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, and bacon and there is plenty of each in every bite. The pizza has that delicious golden brown crunch along the edges and the meats had those crispy bits as well. There were dabs of the same tangy sauce that came with the Snowballs spread throughout the layer of golden brown cheese. This pizza was delicious. It was so big, and so filling I only ate about a third of it when I got home Friday night. It ended up last me all the way to Sunday as I snacked on it and made it lunch both days.

When Yeti Pie first opened, I saw a lot of keyboard warriors complaining about the price. Is it higher than Little Caesars? Well..yeah…but Little Caesars pizza isn’t great. Yeti Pie’s pizza is. If you like Detroit style pizza, you’re going to love this place. I kept seeing pictures online and couldn’t wait to try it. It lived up to the hype I made up in my head.
