Tuesday mornings can be rough for me.

I work until about midnight on Monday then have a 4:45 AM alarm Tuesday morning. It’s the one day of the week our skating club has ice before school.

L hates the idea of skating before school. She doesn’t want to get up that early and doesn’t like going to school after skating for an hour and a half. She does not get up for that morning ice.

B, on the other hand, loves it. There are way fewer people on that morning ice than on the afternoon ice so he can get more work done and run through more of his programs without having to dodge as many people.

We typically go back home after he his done skating before going to school. This past week, B had a doctor’s appointment at 8:00 so there was no point in going home. I decided to go out of my way a little bit and grab us something for breakfast while we waited.

Donut Den opened up in the rebuilt after the tornado shopping center on the corner of Centre Avenue and Oakland Drive in Portage a little over two months ago. The small bakery is nestled in right next to the rebuilt Pizza Hut. This small bakery does one thing. Donuts.

The shop is pretty small but also has a lot of space. That was helpful when the place first open as the lines for a while formed out the door.

The order counter is near the back. It runs parallel with the side wall, not the front door so you need to make your way to the back of the space to find the display.

This was actually my second attempt at stopping at Donut Den. I tried a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning and the cases were already empty. I bailed on that attempt and just figured I’d try during the week when less people are likely to be out trying to find breakfast. I walked in to a fully stocked display case with dozen of donut flavors to choose from.

All of the donuts appear to be cake donuts. I decided to go with the half dozen. I got three glazed donuts, two powdered sugar, and one “Simpsons donut” with pink frosting and Sprinkles. If you pay cash, a half dozen will run you $4.50….if you pay with card, it becomes $6. We also added on a can of Sprite so the total was right around $7.

There is a small dine in space with three booths. They’re not the most comfortable looking booths in the world but if you want to sit an eat, there is an option. We had the time to sit and eat but we passed and just headed over to the doctor’s office on Westnedge. I handed B his donut and he ate while we were driving. I ate mine when we got parked.

I grabbed a glazed donut first. It is exactly what you expect it to be. A cake donut with that delicious sugary glaze.

I wanted to try the powdered sugar one too and I was still kind of hungry so I pulled one of those out of the bag as well. It’s the same kind of donut as the glazed but with a powdered sugar coating instead. Eating this one in the car was kind of a mistake because I got powdered sugar everywhere. It was a tasty donut despite me looking like I got in a fight with a bag of flour when I was finished eating it.

Donut Den is what it is. A solid donut shop. You may have to wait a while if you’re there on busy times. I’ve seen complaints that there isn’t enough staff to efficiently move people in and out when there is a rush but if you go at off peak times, you’ll find a delicious little donut shop.
