Greg’s Gourmet Dishes
Seems like the traveling for work has calmed down some. It kinda sucks because I really like traveling for work but also kinda great because I’m home. Before I got married, I was leaning towards a career that would have me on the road every weekend. That wasn’t something I wanted with a family I know some people do it, but that wasn’t the life I wanted. Getting some weekend trips with the rare weeklong out of town assignment keeps me home most of the time but gives me a chance to do things I like to do.
There have been a lot out of town posts on the blog recently. As I’ve explained many, many times, I use this blog as a journal. It’s fun to go back and read posts over the years and see what was going on in our lives and how I worked it into a blog about food.
Now that I’m back in town, I’ve got some Kalamazoo area restaurants that I need to get to.
I had some time on my lunch break last week so I could actually order food and go pick it up. My lunch breaks, far too often, are spent at City Centre Market or Jimmy Johns.
Greg’s Gourmet Dishes is a place I’ve been wanting to get to for a while. The restaurant is on Riverview Drive next to the 13 1/2 Party Store on the corner with Bridge Street. This location has been many things over the last several years. TNT-Lil’ Brothers BBQ, Burger Bros., and most recently, Burger Boss. Greg’s Gourmet Dishes opened in October.
This particular space has pretty much always been a carry-out only space and Greg’s Gourmet is no different. I put my order in online and by the time I got to the restaurant, it was being boxed up.
There have been some decor changes since Burger Boss but the layout has been the same for quite a while. There is a large waiting area when you walk in. Greg’s Gourmet fancied the place up a little with new flooring and a paint job. There are some seats to wait for your order but, while it’s large enough for a few dine-in tables, there is no place to sit and eat inside the restaurant.
The pick up counter is also exactly the same as it has been for the last three restaurants that were in this spot. There were some cosmetic changes but the large counter separates the kitchen from the waiting area.
I wanted to try a little bit of everything so I ordered the Supreme Bang Box. This meal consists of a Supreme Burger, 2 Whole Wings, and Bacon Loaded Fries. The to-go box was filled with a lot of food. The box was pretty heavy and they packed in as much as they could get in to the Styrofoam.
I started with the Bacon Loaded Fries because they took up the most space and kind of trapped the burger and the wings. The fries are skin-on potatoes topped with a cheese sauce, crumbled bacon, onions, tomatoes and green onions. I could have done without the veggies but that’s just a minor complaint. The fries were delicious. I needed to find a fork in my office to eat them though. They were drowning in the cheese sauce which, while delicious, made them a little hard to pick up.
I went to the two wings next. The wings are breaded, whole wings and come with choice of sauce. I picked the Garlic Parm. The wings are big and juicy but the sauce makes them a little soggy. I usually just do plain wings when I order whole wings like this for that reason but I was in the mood for Garlic Parm on this day. I wasn’t disappointed in flavor. They were delicious.
The final part of this meal was the Supreme Burger. This sandwich is a cheeseburger topped with lettuce, pickles, onions, and Supreme Sauce. The sandwich was interesting. It was a little on the salty side but that just gave it a unique taste. It wasn’t a detraction from everything else that was going on. The sauce was laid on pretty thin…just the way I like it. I like to taste the sauce but I don’t want it to be the dominate flavor. This sandwich had a lot going on but it all worked really well together.
The cost for my meal was $20 but there was a lot of food in this box….more than enough food for one person. I would even say most people could probably get two meals out of this. I probably should have went that route. I was stuffed after eating everything in the box.
Greg’s Gourmet Dishes delivers on the uniqueness and quality of food. The restaurant is the brain child of a Kalamazoo native who wanted to bring something different to Kalamazoo. There’s a lot of soul food on the menu that isn’t really available anywhere else. I stuck to the things I like….burgers, wings, fries…but if you’re a more adventurous eater, there’s a lot at Greg’s Gourmet Dishes for the soul food lover.
