There are a lot of restaurants on this blog that I just drive by and go, “Oh.  I should eat there.”  Sometimes I find hidden gems.  Sometimes I find places that are only open for a couple months.  Sometimes, I find places that have been around forever and am shocked I have never heard of them.

I was driving down Capital Avenue in Battle Creek a few weeks ago and came across one of those place.  I just happened to look to my right as I was passing Territorial Road and saw a sign for BC Subs.  I had never heard of it but I didn’t have time to stop.  About a week later, I had the time and went out of my way to get out of town to stop in to this long time sub shop.

BC Subs is a little difficult to get to if you’re not familiar with it.  It’s right on Capital Avenue and it’s easy to see but you have to turn either on Territorial or Fairfield Avenue before you get to the shop to get in to the parking area that runs parallel to Capital but has no access to the major thoroughfare.

The building has kind of an odd multi-level layout.  You walk in to a small dine-in area with four or five tables.  There was a large group that arrived just before me and they were taking up most of the lower dining area.

The order area is up three or four steps where there is a counter the sections off the kitchen area.  The cash register sits on top of a metal table kind of in the corner.

There are paper menus on the counter to the kitchen but there’s also a big menu board hanging on the wall.  They have a number of combinations of deli meats and cheeses that can be served hot or cold.  There are also some grilled sandwich options and salads.

I picked the #20 which is “Everything.”  There are six meats and three cheeses on the sandwich.  I picked the large portion on white bread.  The subs come with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, oil, and oregano.  The sandwich cost me just under $10 before tip.

I was pretty surprised when I unwrapped this sandwich and found a lot of meat.  The six meats are bologna, ham, salami, mortadella, and capicola….and they didn’t skimp.  There is a thick layer of each plus three thick layers of cheese.  The large sandwich was maybe a six inch sub but it was very filling and super meaty.

BC Subs is a simple submarine sandwich shop that delivers in a big way.  I had no expectations when I walked in the door but I left with a full belly and was very happy with my sandwich.  I don’t know how many times I’ve drove by this place in the past but I won’t be making that mistake again.
