We’re back home from our trip to Upstate New York but that doesn’t mean I’m done traveling.

The week after we got back, I had to go to Detroit for work then Chicago for a baseball game. I’ve been back in Kalamazoo for two weeks and I still haven’t eaten out anywhere locally. I’m still in travel mode.

Last Tuesday, a colleague and I got sent to Detroit for a long shift that would keep us there most of the night and in to the next morning.

We had a couple of hours to kill not long after we got there so I suggested we take a “lunch break” early as it would likely be the only time we would have to eat until we got home very late in to the night.

We were in the New Center District of Detroit north of downtown and there were plenty of options close to our job site for food. I saw a familiar name and suggested we make Tuesday night a pizza night.

We chose Supino Pizzeria on Woodward Avenue near East Milwaukee Avenue just about a mile north of the Woodward Interchange with Interstate 94. This location on Woodward is the second location of Supino Pizzeria in the City of the Detroit. The original location is in the Eastern Market on Russell Street about three miles away. This location opened up in 2021 in a building that looks like it had been abandoned for quite some time. The last thing I can find in the space is Mr. Song Millinery but that was way back in 2009. In the time in between, the building looked to have been shuttered waiting for a revival.

The first thing you walk in to when you walk in the building is a pick up area. You can also order slices and put in to go orders. There’s a small waiting area here with some benches along the outside wall.

There’s a host stand right next to the seating. We stood there for really long time until the bartender asked what we wanted. I told him we’d like a table for too. He asked if we wanted to sit at the bar and I said we’d really like a table if possible….there were plenty open.

The bar is a really nice area and had I been dining alone, would have been my preferred option. It’s a pretty large bar right in the middle of the room. The bar vibes with the room as it’s covered with blue tiles and lit from underneath the bar to give it some ambiance. The collection of liquor bottles are displayed on built in shelving that is also back lit

The dining room is pretty small but has a lot of tables. They make good use of the space with a long shared wooden bench along the walls with tables pushed pretty close together. The bartender took us to a table kind of in the middle of the room but also next to only other person dining in the dining room at that moment.

I got pretty excited when I saw we were near this Supino location because last time I ate at the Eastern Market location, I loved the pizza. I was with a different co-worker that night and she really liked it to. I may have over sold it to current co-worker. I really like the big New York style pizza Supino does but I know that’s not everyone’s game.

I ordered the same thing I did last time. The City Wing Thing. I got the twelve inch even though the company was buying my meal because we were traveling. The City Wing Thing is topped with red sauce, smoked chicken, smoked gouda, banana peppers, roasted garlic, and fresh mozzarella. The pizza is a New York style thin crust that is very foldable. It has a good, hard snap in the end and holds on to the toppings all the way to the center. The pizza is kind of light on cheese as it’s made with fresh cheese and not shredded. The smokiness from the chicken and the gouda are really strong but every now and then, you get a bite of that roasted garlic too. It’s a really good pizza and a really crave able pizza.

My colleague also ordered a 12″ pizza but in addition to that, he got an order of Cheesy bread. This is a 12″ pizza crust topped with fresh mozzarella, mozzarella pearls, gouda, oregano, and parsley. He was expecting something more like Little Caesars Crazy Bread for some reason. To me, this looked delicious. It was a really thin crust so it ate more like a pizza than breadsticks. He didn’t offer to share but I took a slice when he was outside on a phone call. I could have eaten all of this as a meal with some marinara to dip it in. He only ate a couple of slices and took the rest home for later.

The cost of my pizza and a Coke was right around $23 before tip.

I love Supino Pizzeria. I loved it the first time I had it in 2020 and I loved it this time in 2026. I’m glad we had some time to kill on this particular night because this is a part of Detroit I haven’t spent much time in. There are other pizza places that have been on my radar for a while but not this one. I was super excited when I popped open a map and saw how close we were going to be to it.
