Sandwich chains two nights in a row. That’s really unusual for me.

I headed out to Wings Event Center after work to pick up a kid. I didn’t know which one but I knew one of them had to stay later than the other.

I got there a little bit early to pick up B. L wanted to stick around because a lot of the little kids that she helps coach in the club’s Learn To Skate classes were practicing for this weekend’s Skate the Zoo competition.

B didn’t care about that and wanted to go home.

J had gotten the kids Jimmy John’s so they didn’t need anything else to eat. I had Jimmy John’s the night before so I didn’t want that again. I didn’t want to go too far out of my way or make B sit in the car while I went inside to grab something so I just resigned myself to the fact I was going to get fast for or something along Sprinkle Road…or it was going to be a frozen pizza night.

I really wasn’t in the mood for a fast food burger or a slice of gas station pizza so I opened up my phone and put in an order for a Subway sandwich.

The closest Subway to Wings Event Center is on the corner of Sprinkle Road and Covington Road just barely inside the city limits of Kalamazoo. The building looks a little warn. It’s a two storefront commercial building with grey vinyl siding. The Subway has been there for well over 15 years according to Google maps and if you scroll through the old street view pictures, you can see how the chain has changed branding over the years.

Because this is an older location, the building is still set up with quite a bit of seating off to the left. The traditional Subway order counter is right in front of you as you walk in the door. The iconic glass sneeze guard with pans of toppings are all laid out right as you walk in the door.

I haven’t actually ordered in person at a Subway in years. The few times I’ve gone there recently, I’ve just ordered off the app for in store pickup. I asked for my sandwich a the register and it was there waiting for me. I also ordered a bottle of Pepsi which I grabbed from the cooler on my way out. The cost for a foot long Steak Philly with 50% more meat and a bottle of Pepsi was about $18.

I grabbed the sandwich, pop and headed back to the car where B was waiting for me. He was ready to go home and I wasn’t going to attempt to eat this in the car.

When I got home, I unrolled the sandwich and pulled apart the two halves. I ordered this Steak Philly on Italian herbs and cheese bread with American cheese, jalapenos, red wine vinegar, oil, lettuce, and Parmesan cheese. I also had the sandwich toasted. The sandwich also had 50% more steak but it didn’t really feel like it. It was still a little thin. I will say I haven’t been a fan of Subway sandwiches for years. I ate them a lot more growing up in the 90’s when they still did the V-cut (IYKYK). I do find this Steak Philly and enjoyable sandwich though after I get rid of all the onions and peppers. The steak is usually pretty tender and the cheese just melts in to the crevices of the steak which I very much appreciate.

I think I’ve said it before. Subway isn’t my first..or second…or third…or probably even fourth…choice when it comes to sandwiches but the thing is, they’re everywhere. They’re easy to order from and it’s always going to be a decent sandwich. I was a huge fan of Subway growing up so it’s not like I hate the sandwiches. There’s still some nostalgia there for me and if it’s convenient, I don’t have a problem with ordering a footlong for dinner.
