The Traverse City figure skating competition is one of our favorites. The area is gorgeous and we’re there right at the beginning of summer so it’s still nice and cool along the bay but also sunny enough to sit out on the beach.

We had a pretty big break in the day on Friday which has never happened in the past. L had one skate around lunch time and that was it. The second part of her event was Saturday morning.

B didn’t skate at all on Friday. He had one event on Thursday and one event Saturday afternoon. We went to the rink Friday morning to watch his friends and, of course, his sister but then he was pretty much off the hook until a late practice session after the event concluded for the day.

We spent the day hanging out on the beach with friends at our hotel and playing miniature golf across the street at Pirate’s Cove with some friends from Ann Arbor.

L had asked if she could go play mini golf with friends later in the evening then go to Olive Garden for dinner. I absolutely did not want Olive Garden nor where B and I invited anyway.

The two of us hung out in our hotel room until his practice session at 8:00 PM. Unfortunately, the excitement of the day got the best of him and he fell asleep. I had to wake him up and get him back to Centre Ice Arena.

The practice session did not go well and I ended up pulling him off early. He was tired and it just wasn’t going well.

While I was sitting in the stands, I started planning my dinner. J and L had went to Olive Garden so they were out. B said he wasn’t hungry. I decided to order a pizza thinking if anyone else was hungry, they could eat some of that too.

I picked That’sa Pizza in Acme Township. It’s not the closest That’sa Pizza to the Centre Ice Arena. That would actually be the Hammond Road location and we ordered from there last year so I decided to do something different.

The Acme location of That’sa Pizza is on US-31 South of Mt. Hope Road across the street from the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. The physically address keeps coming up for Williamsburg, MI but the restaurant is branded and sits in Acme Township east of Traverse City proper. The small roadside restaurant butts almost right up to US-31. There is some parking along the side and in the back but it’s pretty tight.

I walked in to the building to find the order counter right in front of me. Two people came out of the kitchen and asked for my name. It was getting pretty close to their 9:00 PM closing time so they probably trying to get me in and out as quickly as possible.

I ordered a 14″ thin crust pepperoni pizza and beer cheese bites. I actually had no idea what those were because there was no description on the menu but I like beer cheese so I ordered them anyway. The cost was just under $30.

It was almost closing time and I was planning on eating this solo so I was heading back to the hotel to eat. To my surprise, there is a small dining room. I didn’t think there would be room for that from the look of the building from the outside but there are a just over a half a dozen booths. The look of the place really goes for that Northern Michigan rustic cabin feel with wood paneling walls that extend to the backs of the booths. It’s a very cozy dining space and there were actually a couple of tables finishing up as I was grabbing my pizzas to head back to Grand Beach Resort to eat.

I started with the Beer Cheese Bites when I got back to the balcony overlooking Grand Traverse Bay. I was expecting something like stuffed cheese bites or something but this was a bread with a bacon bit and salt topping to dip in to a thick, delicious beer cheese. The beer cheese was really good. I used some on the bread it came with and some on the pizza crust. The bread was almost a little too salty but the cheese really cut some of that down. It’s one of those things that I wanted to stop eating because it was salty but also, I couldn’t stop eating it.

The pizza I ordered was a 14″ thin crust pepperoni. Last year I did the regular crust but this time, I wanted to try something different. We’re typically thin crust people anyway so this was a good fit.

The pizza was covered in spicy but not super greasy pepperoni and a deep, golden brown cheese. The sauce had kind of a sweetness to it that I couldn’t get enough of. I ended up eating half of this watching the sunset Friday night then finished it over the next two days for breakfast.

J made a comment when I got back that we all kind of did our own thing for dinner and that’s kind of unusual at competitions. We usually do that for lunch but we try to do dinners together.

It worked out pretty well. L got her Olive Garden and got to hang with friends. B got a nap after a busy day playing in the sun. I got a tasty pizza to eat while watching the sun set on a gorgeous night in Traverse City.
