Remember a few weeks ago when I wrote about Needoh hunting? It’s a little out of control.

Forget Me Not, the shop in Three Rivers I blogged about a few weeks ago, announced on their Facebook page they were going to have huge Nee-doh drop on Sunday. J and B had already made plans to run down there and see what they could get.

But on Saturday, they put a post up saying if you came in and ordered a specific ice cream, there was a special surprise. It sounded like a Swirlin’ USA Needoh. J asked L and I if we wanted to go. L said yes for the ice cream, I said yes if we could go to breakfast/lunch afterwards.

We got down to Three Rivers, got the kids their Needohs then headed across the street for lunch.

We did the whole Michigan left thing to make our way back to Big House Breakfast & Burgers. We’ve eaten at this restaurant on US-131just north of Broadway Street a few times over the years. It looks like it was originally a Big Boy, but we’ve eaten there when it was Oasis Family Restaurant and more recently when it was Flat Rock Grill. The restaurant changed hands again last September and became The Big House.

The restaurant hasn’t really changed much from it’s days at Flat Rock Grill. The entryway is still set up like a Big Boy and the first thing you walk in to is three rows of booth running down the middle of the building. A waitress saw us walk in and showed us to one of those booths near the entrance.

There are some tables near the back of the space. They’re kind of spread out just past the booths and then into what appears to be an old solarium that has been partially covered. This is a huge improvement over the old Oasis Family Restaurant, but again, not much appears to have changed in the short time between the Flat Rock owners and the new owners of The Big House.

It was a little after 12:30 when we walked in and while this is a breakfast all day place, most of us opted for lunch. B was the only one who chose breakfast ordering the kid’s Silver Dollar Pancakes. He got six small silver dollar pancakes that he practically inhaled with just a little bit of butter. He also got a choice of meat and he chose bacon. When the waitress set the plate down he looked at it and said, “a single sad, lonely piece of bacon?” Had we known, we probably would have ordered him a side of bacon as well.

L was going to order breakfast but saw the Classic BLT on the menu. It’s supposed to come with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on toasted Texas Toast. She left the tomato and mayo off making it a BL sandwich instead. Unlike B, she got quite a bit of bacon on her sandwich and she was really happy with the choice. The sandwich came with fries. She ate a few but she’s not a big fry eater. She was also pretty stuffed from the pre-meal ice cream she had at Forget Me Not.

Whenever J eats at a dinner, she just wants a simple grilled cheese. They had a Fancy Grilled Cheese on the menu with Swiss and sharp cheddar cheeses, bacon, and tomato. She asked if she could just get a simple grilled cheese. The waitress said yes and brought her just that. White bread, yellow cheese. A simple diner grilled cheese. Her sandwich came with fries too. She ate half of the sandwich and a few of the fries and brought the rest home for dinner.

I was almost ready to order my favorite breakfast…Eggs Benedict, but decided to go with a burger instead. I picked the Breakfast Burger which came with two smash patties, bacon, fried hashbrowns, American cheese, a fried egg, and a maple aioli. This sandwich was massive and it really did taste like breakfast. The maple aioli kind of made everything sticky so I was hesitant to put it down. The smash patties had those crispy bits around the edges but the real crunch came from the bacon. I almost forgot the hash brown was even there until a few bites in when I really got that potato taste and realized it was the bread. I wish you could see what this thing looked like..but I forgot to take a picture. I’ve been writing this blog for 17 years and I don’t think I’ve ever forgotten to take a picture of my meal….someone elses, yeah, a few times, but never mine. As I was staring at the empty plate, I looked up at J and said, “I don’t think I took a picture.” I wiped the maple syrup off my hands and checked my phone. Sure enough, it wasn’t there. Too bad…this sandwich was a beast and it was really tasty.

The cost for our breakfast/lunch was a little over $60. I know everyone years for the days when you could go to a diner and get a meal for under $10/person but I’m pretty sure those days are gone. We all left full and happy with our meals. J took half of hers home so it also became her dinner.

Big House Breakfast & Burgers is exactly what you expect from the name. It’s a classic family diner that does a little more than just the simple things.
