I know I said in my previous blog post that I thought about going back to Mary’s Bistro Draught House for dinner my second day working on Mackinac Island but in reality, I wasn’t going to do that. The food was really good but the price was a little much two nights in a row.

I hopped on the 6:30 ferry back to Mackinaw City and realized I hadn’t eaten much all day. I was really hungry and those days when I forget to eat lunch and I’m really hungry by dinner time usually means I’m ordering a pizza.

I typically have a hard time ordering a pizza in Mackinaw City. The BC Pizza seems to be closed the nights that I’m there (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). The local place in town, MaMa Mia’s Pizza is usually pretty busy and I don’t feel like waiting.

I needed to go get gas and run a few errands when I got back to the hotel and I drove down Central Street for the first time on this trip. I really hadn’t had a reason to go downtown but I decided to look to see if there was anything open that would be quick.

As I turned on to Central Street from Huron Street, I noticed a new pizza place.

Fox’s Pizza Den is on the south side of Central Street near Huron Street in downtown Mackinaw City. It took over the building next to the Harley Davidson shop that was the Pizza Palace. This place was always closed when I was there. It’s usually pretty early in the season and they were only open for weekends it seems like Fox’s Pizza Den is open during the week so I was able to get my pizza fix without leaving town.

When I drove by and saw Fox’s open, I immediately pulled in to an open parking spot to put my order in online. I still had things to do but I wanted to get that pizza ready while I was doing what I needed to do before the drive home the next day.

I ordered a medium thin crust meat supreme then added on jalapenos. I also decided to grab an order of fries. Weird order for a pizza place but they do some Gourmet Fries and the Buffalo option sounded good.

I got back to the store just about 20 minutes after ordering. There were a couple of people already at the pickup counter near the front of the store. The waitress working the whole floor was running back and forth to get their pizzas.

This restaurant was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. I was expecting a take-out place with a few tables similar to the one in Battle Creek but this restaurant had a full on dining room with a bar. Unsure if they have a liquor license but there is a nice big space there if they do/want to.

I got the food back to the hotel and went right in for the Gourmet Fries. These wedge fries were topped with Buffalo sauce and Ranch dressing. The fries were surprisingly crispy for being in a to-go box and drench in sauce. A fork would have been the polite way to eat this mess of potatoes, but I was alone in a hotel room so I went all in with my fingers.

The pizza I ordered was a medium meat supreme that I added jalapenos to. I did the thin crust because I like thin crust pizza better. Last time we ordered Fox’s, we did the Big Daddy which is a rectangle pizza. I didn’t need that much food this time so thin crust it was.

The Meat Supreme comes with pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, and beef. There’s a lot for that thin crust pizza to hold up. The pizza was a little crispy where it needed to be and a little spicy with the meats. The curst is a little bit of a thicker crust than I would use think of for thin crust but it wasn’t nearly as thick as typical delivery pizza. The jalapenos added just a little bit of a stronger kick to complement the spicy meats.

The cost of my meal before tip was right around $27.

There are 300 Fox’s Pizza Den locations nationwide but only two in Michigan. There’s the one in Emmett Township and now this one in Mackinaw City.

I’ve enjoyed the pizza both times I’ve eaten there. It’s just enough different from the typical delivery pizza that I can forget that it’s not a local joint.
