I don’t typically eat on Mackinac Island unless I’m staying on the Island. Restaurants are a little more expensive on the Island and I’m typically running to a ferry trying to get back to the City at a decent time.

I had some rare downtown on my last day working on the Island this spring. I’m typically pretty busy from the time I get off the ferry to the time I get back on, but this day was different.

I haven’t actually walked around Mackinac Island in quite a while. J and I went over a decade ago right after we moved to Michigan and that’s the only time I’ve been there for pleasure. I’ve stayed on the Island a couple times for work but I’m usually too exhausted to do any exploring once I get back to whatever hotel I’m staying at.

I was working at the Grand Hotel so I walked down to Main Street just before noon. I kind of had an idea of where I wanted to go. I was looking for quick and as cheap as I could find on the Island.

I picked Mighty Mac Hamburgers on Main Street (Lake Shore Drive/M-185) right at the intersection with Astor Street in downtown Mackinac Island.

The restaurant has been around since 1970 and is still owned by the family that started.

My main draw to Mighty Mac Hamburgers was the fast casual concept. A lot of restaurants on Mackinac Island are full service and while I probably had the time, I didn’t really feel like sitting down to eat.

There’s an order counter and a queue right inside the door. The menu of burgers, sandwiches, and fries hangs from two LCD monitors behind the cash register.

Might Mac Burgers offers online ordering but I figured I’d just walk down and order it in person. I know…weird for me anymore.

I put in an order for the 1/4 lb. Spicy Burger and made it a combo with a medium fries and drink. I was handed a drink cup and an order number. The total cost was right around $15.

It only took a couple of minutes for my order to be called. There was a surprisingly big dining room with rows of leather booths. I asked for my order to go because I assumed they were all full based on how many people in front of me were ordering but that was not the case.

I actually headed to the back patio. There I found a great little deck with plastic patio furniture overlooking the docks that run along the length of Main Street.

There was one other couple out there so I just grabbed a spot in the corner and started unloading my bag.

I started with the fries first. They’re skin on fries but there wasn’t much flavor to them. Could have used a little more salt or something. Luckily there was a bottle of mustard on the table so that was my flavor enhancer. The fries were much larger than I thought they’d be for a medium and it was a nice compliment to my burger.

The burger I got was the Spicy Burger. This sandwich is a 1/4 lb burger patty with chipotle mayo, pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and jalapenos. The burger was pretty spicy…mostly from the fresh jalapenos. The burger was better than the typical fast casual cheeseburger. It was juicy and had a delicious crust from the griddle it was cooked on.

Mighty Mac Hamburgers was worth the walk down the hill from the Grand Hotel. You know me, I’m a burger guy. I don’t like fancy meals. Places like Mighty Mac Hamburgers are right in my wheelhouse.
