I had never had a Jersey style sub before I moved to Lansing in 2008. One of the first quick food recommendations I got was for Jersey Giant Subs. I guess they were pretty popular at Michigan State University at the time. I eventually tried the one near my apartment and it was pretty easy to see why people liked these subs.

I figured Jersey Giant was something unique because, again, I had never seen subs like that before. I had no idea there are others out there and that this is a legit style of sub sandwich.

One of the big name Jersey sub shop chains opened their first Kalamazoo location a few weeks ago.

Jersey’ Mike’s Subs is on West Main Street in Kalamazoo Township near Sage Street in the strip mall on the south side of the road. Jersey Mike’s takes over for China Kitchen which had been in that location for several years.

Jersey Mike’s is a sub shop just like a lot of other sub shop. It’s a counter service place where you order on one end then pick your sandwich up at the other. They have a number of cold subs as well as some hot cheesesteak subs to choose from.

There are a few tables along the walls of the restaurant but most people grab and go.

If you’re familiar with Jersey Giant in this area, you’re going to be pretty familiar with Jersey Mike’s. The subs come in three sizes (mini, regular, or giant) or as the option to be made in to a wrap. I ordered a regular #3 The Original Italian.

The meat is sliced fresh after you choose the bread. I kept it simple and just picked the white bread. Other options are Rosemary Parmesan, wheat, or gluten free. The meats on this sandwich are standard Italian meats. Ham, prosciutto, cappacuola, salami, and pepperoni. There is also provolone cheese.

The veggie station is right next to the slicing station. The default for sandwiches is “Mike’s Way.” This would get you a sandwich with onions, lettuce, tomato, vinegar, oil, and spices. I don’t like onions or tomatoes on sandwiches but I do like banana peppers so I didn’t do Mike’s Way but instead just did lettuce, banana peppers, oil, vinegar, and spices.

I slid down to the cash register after my sandwich was wrapped. I didn’t need chips or a drink so my total was a little over $9.

I headed to work to eat my sandwich. It’s always good to let those meats marinate in the oil and vinegar a little bit.

It has been several years since the only other time I’ve picked up a sandwich from a Jersey Mike’s location. No surprise, I also ordered the #3 when I ate at the location in Walker.

The sandwich is solid. It’s a delicious, hunger busting sandwich and even the regular size is big enough leftovers are quite possible.

We’re already pretty well acquainted with this type of sandwich in Kalamazoo thanks to the multiple Jersey Giant Subs locations we have in the area. For that reason, I don’t think Jersey Mike’s is going to surprise anyone. The sandwiches are pretty similar (although Jersey Giant’s bread is better) so the choice is up to you. Chain or local? You’re going to get a delicious, filling sandwich either way.

The cold subs sound similar, but I did have one of their cheesesteak subs on the eastside and it was quite good. Highly recommend.
