McGonigle’s Deli
It’s been a while since I’ve been to Battle Creek but it seems like I’ve spent quite abit of time there the last few weeks.
My first trip back there in some time took me to a job near Bailey Park. It was a quick thing in the morning and I was done right around lunch time. I really don’t get out to that area in Pennfield Township very much so I pulled up Google to see if I could find someplace to grab something to eat real quick.
I was a little bit surprised to find a deli not too far from where I was. I had no idea if it was even open so I drove down the street to a small strip mall behind the Shell gas station on Capital to see what I could find.
McGonigles Deli can’t really be seen from the street. I (thought I) knew it was there so I turned in to the parking lot off of J Barlett Drive and found an open sign in the window of the corner restaurant.
The small restaurant has quite a bit going on. The building is not only a deli but also a small market and pizzeria. The place has a very clean, new look with dark floors and white walls. There is a pizza counter on one side of the room and a deli counter kind of right in the middle.
The opposite wall has some of their higher end deli products. I picked up a jar of giardiniera from my once favorite football coach but decided against it. I already had a different brand at home and Ditka’s not really my favorite football coach anymore.
I was kind of hanging out at the deli counter and no one was acknowledging me while they were building other sandwiches. A lady working the pizza counter said she could take my order so I turned towards her and ordered the Italian. The cost was a little over $12 and I paid for that on my card.
It took quite a while for the sandwich to be made. The lunch rush had just started so the ladies were working on quite a bit but it was well over ten minutes until my name was called. There is a little bit of seating inside right now so I plopped down in one of those chairs and waited but took my sandwich to go once it was bagged up and my name was called.
I ended up going home to eat because I didn’t really have much to do that I needed to be at the office for the rest of the day.
I was really surprised by the size of the sandwich when I pulled it out. J asked me if I had stopped at Jersey Giant. The sandwich isn’t quite as long as a Jersey Giant but it’s really thick.
The Italian comes with salami, pepperoni, capicola, ham, oven roasted tomatoes, banana peppers, red onions, lettuce, provolone cheese and a house made “sub sauce.” I chose to get my sandwich on a white hoagie but but they also have a few other bread options.
The sandwich was really good. There was a lot of meat piled between the veggies and it was all fresh sliced. I will admit, it was a little bit of a surprise find. I had never heard of this deli before and I really wasn’t expecting to find something like that where I was. I was hoping for a coffee shop with decent food….otherwise it was Taco Bell….so finding McGonigle’s was pretty amazing. I’ve spent more time in Battle Creek than I typically do recently and have went back for lunch a second time.
McGongile’s Deli is really kind of off the beaten path in Battle Creek but if you know where to look, it’s really a great stop for lunch.
