Baskin-Robbins – S. Cicero, Oak Lawn, IL
This is one of my favorite weekends of the year. It’s the weekend of our annual baseball trip. My best friend from childhood, my dad, and my brother do a lot of tailgating in the parking lot of U. S. Cellular Field then enjoy some good ol’ southside baseball.
Even though she doesn’t get to go, J always comes home with me and spends the night hanging out with her high school friends and her parents. Usually we do this trip in September, but the weekend that worked for us this year was at the end of June….which is always my Mother-In-Laws birthday.
J had thought about ordering some cupcakes from the Cupcake Zoo, but things don’t always travel well with us. We decided to hit up a Baskin-Robbins on the way home and bring ice cream cake instead.
Baskin Robbins is a Massachusetts based global ice cream parlor. The name is very familiar in Chicago and you can find shops all over the place. They’re not as popular in Michigan with the only shop within 50 miles of Kalamazoo being in St. Joseph. Recently, they’ve been teaming up with Dunkin Donuts stores so you can get coffee, donuts, and ice cream all in the same place.
We stopped at the Baskin-Robbins on Cicero Avenue just to the north of 108th Street on South Cicero Avenue in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn. This shop is a new store and one of the aforementioned Baskin-Robbins/Dunkin Donuts combo stores.
J left L and I in the car while she went in to grab a cake for her mom. They have an array of already made cakes for sale and they were able to write a personalized message on top once J picked out the one she wanted.
The cost was a little over $22 for the cake that would serve 4-6 people.
After pulling out some candles and singing Happy Birthday to “Na-Na,” we cut into the cake before it had a chance to melt on the counter.
The bottom layer of the cake we chose was vanilla cake which is then topped cookies and cream ice cream and a layer of vanilla ice cream for frosting. For some reason, L was super interested in it, but everyone else really liked it. I was more than happy to take L’s slice as I love cookies ‘n creme ice cream. I wasn’t really expecting the cake party of the cake…I assumed it would be all ice cream, but the cake did make it feel like the old days when we used to have cake and ice cream at birthday parties.
Baskin-Robbins actually has quite the array of cakes you can pre-order and get a little more customization on them, but for what we needed, the cake was perfect. It let us celebrate Na-Na’s birthday AND enjoy ice cream. Win-win.
