Our Brewing Company
J and I were hoping we’d get one night while we were on vacation to go out by ourselves. No baby. L has so much fun with NaNa and Gwapa so we really didn’t think we’d have to worry about sneaking away for an hour or two.
We talked about going to Saugatuck Brewing on Saturday night, but ultimately decided to wait. We’re really not Friday/Saturday night bar people anymore. Instead, all five of us went and had a fantastic lupper (lunch/supper…you know, that meal at about 3:36/4:00) at Saugatuck on Sunday.
After we left the brewery, J asked her parents if she and I could take a trip in to Holland to hit up another brewery. Her parents were alright with it, so they dropped us off at our car and we headed north.
We spent this rare few hours together at Our Brewing Company on 8th Street in downtown Holland. If you know were New Holland is, just go a few doors down and you’ll find Our.
J and I decided to hit this place up alone because they don’t actually serve food, so we didn’t know if it was a place we should take L. We would have been fine. There were actually several kids her age or younger hanging out with their parents and no one seemed to mind.
We were pretty happy to walk in to this beautiful space and find it mostly empty. There were three other tables being used and a couple people at the bar. We really enjoy more laid back places without a lot of noise so we can talk and relax.
If you look at the beer menu on their website, there are so many more beers than what they have on tap at any given time. They have at least ten taps with rotating brews.
The beers on tap this day were written on a chalkboard hanging above the bar. I was a little disappointed to not find any sort of IPA, but they did have one beer on tap that I have heard great things about.
I ordered the Peanut Butter Stout (not sure if this is different from the Peanut Butter Cup Milk Stout). It comes in a 12 oz. snifter and it’s a very dark, silky smooth stout brewed with a lot of peanut butter. I was trying to sip and enjoy, but it was so good I had a hard time putting it down. It’s a great take on a stout with the peanut butter and the chocolatey-ness of a stout.
J, who hasn’t been much of a beer drinker was very excited to see a number of Hard Ciders on tap. She was excited about going to Our Brewing Company because I was excited about it. I figured we’d have one beer then go find another place so she could get a drink she would like, but the cider kept her in the brewery a little bit longer than I expected.
Her first choice was the Fresh Apple Cider. This drink was very crispy and very apple-y. It tasted like apple juice, but you knew there was more than that going on at 7% abv. She loved it, but was excited to try another one the list as well.
Drink number two was the Streak of Virtue Hard Cider. This one was much darker than the first, but to my uninitiated palate, it tasted like apple cider again. J, however, seemed to like this one a little bit better and she ended up giving me the last few drinks of the Fresh Apple Cider to finish off as she switched to the Streak of Virtue.
My final drink was the Our ESB. Another wonderful beer with kind of a mild bitterness to it. It didn’t have the really hoppy bitterness that IPA’s have and it drank much smoother because of it.
Before leaving, we had to pick up a couple pint glasses. They have a really great/funny design with mustaches on one side of them, so when you drink, it looks to the person sitting across from you that you have a white mustache. We bought one for us and one for my mother-in-law who loved it.
We spent about $35 on four drinks and two glasses to take home. Our Brewing Company is a fantastic place to drink in downtown Holland. Like I mentioned earlier, they don’t serve food themselves, but they have a number of take out menus to area restaurants and you’re free to bring your own food in.
Date night was a success for us. I was very happy (as was J) to find the hard cider on the menu. That made things more enjoyable for both of us although just being out together is a great evening.

Have to love Our Brewery, its a frequent spot of mine. It is definitely kid friendly, I see infants, to toddlers, to school age kids, to high schoolers with parents all hanging out here. They have cards and other games available on the tables throughout the establishment as well, which can help keep the kids entertained. The carryout option is one of my favorite, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds – great tasty beer and a wide variety of food options. Some food places delivery to the brewery, and others you can just walk to an pick up and bring back. Your next post should be reviewing the various carryout options available to Our Brewery.
We had just eaten dinner at Saugatuck Brewing….so we weren’t looking for food…plus, it was Sunday, so most of the restaurants downtown were closed anyway….I do love the concept though…I noticed they even have menus for nearby restaurants available in the bar….
