Remember that co-worker that was craving Mancino’s last week?  Yeah, we were in Kalamazoo this afternoon and on our drive from Grand Rapids, I asked if she brought lunch.  Her eyes got really big and asked if there was a Mancino’s in Kalamazoo.  I think I made her day.

After taking care of business on the east side of town, I pointed the car towards Gull Road.

Samuel Mancino’s Italian Eatery is on Gull to the east of Nazareth Road.  It’s in a small shopping center with an H & R Block and a few other businesses.

Like every other Mancino’s I’ve been in, the decor is kind of stereotypical Italian.  The color scheme is red, white, and green and, of course, the tables are covered in red and white checkered table cloths.

The order counter is in the back where the kitchen is.  We each grabbed a paper menu off the counter to find our sandwich.  I don’t think I’ve ever ordered anything from Mancino’s other than a pizza grinder.  Hell, I don’t think I’ve even ever looked at a menu.  I know what I like, but I thought maybe it was time to go for something else.

My co-worker, however, wanted to stick with the pizza grinder.  That is the sandwich she has been craving and has been craving for several months.  The problem is, she couldn’t find it on the menu and neither could I.  When it was her turn to order, she asked, hoping, that the pizza grinder was still an option.  Lucky for her, it was.  The problem came with the size.  In fact, we both made this mistake.

Last time we ate at a Mancino’s (and everytime I’ve eaten there in the past), the size options were 8″ or 16″.  This time, the size options were 4″ or 8″ although there was an option for 16″, but the menu prices showed the two smaller sizes.  Neither of us saws the 16″ option and just assumed the 4″ and 8″ were the sizes we got last time.  Once our sandwiches came out, we realized our mistake.  Both of us got sandwiches half the size of what we wanted.

Still, they didn’t disappoint.  C.W. got the pizza sub she was craving.  The toasted bread comes with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni.  For her, the bread is what makes this sandwich so craveable.  She loves the toasted edges and the softness in the middle.

Since I decided to stray from the pizza sub, I didn’t know what I was in for.  I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Grinder.  I chose Italian bread which I had never had before.  It’s the same toasty bread with Italian herbs and cheese baked in to the top.  The filling is chicken breast chunks tossed in Frank’s Red Hot sauce that’s topped with mozzarella cheese, and a bleu cheese dressing.  The sandwich was delicious.  The spicy was counterbalanced by the bleu cheese sauce.  There was ample supply of chicken with just a light dressing of the hot sauce.  The sandwich could have also included tomato and lettuce, but I left those off.  It didn’t really make sense to me to have veggies on a Buffalo chicken sandwich.

The bill for both of our sandwich was right around $11.  That’s a little on the cheap side because we both got smaller sandwiches than what we really wanted.  Other than that, I think I accomplished my goal of helping a co-worker get something she can’t get in Grand Rapids anymore.

Disappointed at the menu options wasn’t as advertised on the website and grinders use to be offered in 8 and 16 inch sizes this set Mancino’s apart from other eateries that, also the hours are also not the same. The place closes a hour early what shows on the website when I went call and make order at 8p.m. I was told that they were closed. The young lady was really snappy like she was tired of asking the same questions like they get this call a lot. From my understanding most franchise s are uniform when it comes to things like price product size and time the business are open, so thing like this doesn,’t happen and they loose business because of this. It’s sad I came back to home town and wanted to eat at one of my favorite restaurant and wasn’t able to!

Haven’t eaten there in a while. What sandwich sizes do they offer now? When I ate there (When this post was written) they did offer the 8 or 16 inch as well as a 4 inch…you just had to ask for the 16 and the menu was like it was on the website
