Getting off at midnight sucks some nights.  I actually like working the night shift, but when I head for home and I’m hungry, choices are pretty limited.  Most of the time, I stop at McDonalds in Wayland, but that gets a little old.  I was going to do the same on my way home from work tonight, but I decided to wait until I got back to Kalamazoo.

Sure, I could have stopped at a McDonalds in Kalamazoo, but why do that when Steak ‘n Shake is right across the street?

The Oshtemo Township Steak ‘n Shake location is on West Main Street just to the east of Maple Hill Drive.  It’s easily identifiable by it’s trademark black, red, and white color scheme.  If you’ve never been to or see a Steak ‘n Shake, here’s the gist of it.  They want to replicate a 50’s diner

When you go in to a Steak ‘n Shake location, it’s a full sit down meal.  There’s a waitress who serves you and the food is made to order.  When you go to the drive thru, you still get that made to order goodness which means you’re going to be sitting a little bit longer than if you went to a fast food chain.

When I pulled in around 12:30, no surprise, the place was pretty busy.  There were four cars ahead of me in line which normally would have caused me to just go to Taco Bell, but the Main Street Taco Bell is closed for remodeling.

I waited it out because I really had nothing else to do.  I wasn’t even close to be tired and I knew J was already bed, so it was just going to be me sitting out on the deck, eating Steak ‘n Shake, and listening to the crickets.

The Steakburgers are the big menu item.  The burgers are made from a mixture of T-Bone, Sirloin, and Round Steak.  They’ve added a number of tasty sounding burgers, but it’s hard to read all that info on a drive thru menu.  I just ordered the #4 Combo which is a Bacon ‘n Cheese Double.  It comes with a small order of fries and a Coke Zero.

The fries have never been my favorite, but I know people, J included, who really like them.  They’re shoestring fries served up crispy and salty.  I’ve just always thought they were too thin and not very filling.  They’re delicious, but I like a little more meat in my potatoes.

The Steakburgers are grilled to order and very thin.  That makes them cook fast so they can still turn you through the drive thru fairly quickly.  You never have to worry about your burger sitting under a warmer or being nuked before you get it.  They do have a taste that sets them apart from the competition.  I’m not usually one for steak burgers because they’re usually so lean there isn’t much flavor left.  Since these are cooked up so thin, the fat doesn’t really matter.  I ate it so fast, I forgot to even take a picture……

My bill was around seven bucks.  Pretty good for drive thru food that is not actually considered fast food.  I’ve always liked Steak ‘n Shake as an alternative to the typical late night options.  It’s fairly quick and quite tasty.  Not a bad combination.

I think it’s the thinness of the fries that bugs me. I eat fries with a fork often (un-American, sorry), and they’re just too small for forking.
Also, give the Frisco Melt a try. It’s the steak patty on grilled toast with a sweet, goopy sauce the color of sweet potatoes. I converted to these a few years ago and get them on every S&S stop.

That’s ok…I pick them up and because they’re so thin, I drop more than I get in mouth. Sucks being uncoordinated.

The cheese goop (who knows) kind of clings them together, if you’re looking for a new strategy.
