This was a lunch conversation that started at 5:00 AM.  For some annoying reason, I couldn’t sleep.  I got up to watch reruns of King of the Hill on Adult Swim and I came to the realization that I was hungry.  Being a smartass and after watching last night’s South Park, I tweeted that I wanted Baconalia.  J, who was at work, tweeted back that she wanted the Tortilla Scramble from IHOP that we saw on a commercial last night while watching TV.  From there, we proceeded to have a whole conversation on Twitter about getting breakfast.  She wanted me to go pick up breakfast from IHOP and bring it to her….but it was raining and I didn’t want to leave hoping that I would soon fall asleep.

After watching an episode of Full House, I did finally fall asleep and didn’t wake up until 1:00.  J was already home and watching TV on the couch when I stumbled out to the living room.  After getting passed the groggy stage, J said she was hungry and I asked if she still wanted the Tortilla Scramble.

She didn’t, but we still had IHOP on the brain and I wasn’t in the mood to think of anything else, so we headed to the IHOP in Portage which is right off I-94 at the Westnedge exit.  It shares a building with BD’s Mongolian Grill.

We walked in to an empty restaurant and were seated in a booth along the wall in the dining room that is to the right of the entrance.  In prehistoric Michigan, one of the two dining rooms was probably the smoking section.

When our waitress came over, I put in an order for a Pepsi while J got a Raspberry Lemonade.  We weren’t quite ready to order when our drinks came so we asked for a few minutes.  Bad move.

Pretty much as expected, service was pretty awful.  I don’t really have high standards for chains like this and they pretty much lived up to those low standards in the service department.  We were the only ones in the dining room yet we were being ignored by our waitress who was flirting with another employee.  We sat there for quite a few minutes trying to make eye contact with the waitress who was walking around the dining room but not coming back to us.

When she did finally come back, we were more than ready.   I went with lunch food and ordered the Bacon ‘n Beef Bacon & Egg Cheeseburger.  The burgers at IHOP have hickory smoked bacon blended in with the meat.  I couldn’t taste it, but then again, I did have more bacon on top.  The sandwich is pretty unusual for a casual chain like IHOP.  The egg on a hamburger is usually reserved as a low end item on a high end restaurant’s menu.  The egg was cooked just past medium and placed between the burger and the bacon.  The sandwich is served on a Romano-Parmesan bun.  The sandwich was good, but a little over cooked.  Again, something to be expected at a place like this.  They’re not going to chance it by doing anything other than well-done.  The sandwich came with skin on fries that needed a little more salt.

J stuck with breakfast food and ordered the Stuffed French Toast with strawberry topping, scrambled eggs, bacon, and hash browns.  The toast is a cinnamon raisin french toast with a sweet cream filling.  She said it tasted like a donut and that it was pretty good, but didn’t really like the strawberry glaze.  It was a little too sweet.  She would have preferred something more like a compote or something fresher.

Service was still an issue through the meal.  After ordering, we both sat with empty glasses for a long time.  Our server had completely disappeared and our food took well over fifteen minutes….in an empty restaurant.

The bill was a little over $22.  Our experience at IHOP was pretty much what I expected.  The food was fine.  I would eat it again and I’m sure J would too, but why not seek out a local place.  Service could use a little work, but other than that, I was fine with the food and we got IHOP out of our system.  My mom loves the place so I’m sure this won’t be my last trip, but I don’t see J and I going back anytime soon.
