Thursday and Friday for the next couple weeks are going to be throwaway days for me.  There is no better sporting event than the NCAA Tournament.  The games already today have proven that.

That said, I’m probably going to be lazy when it comes to food.

J came home from work today not feeling all that great and wanting soup.  She suggested going to Panera for lunch.  I really wasn’t in the mood for Panera, but I really wasn’t in the mood for any place that was going to have soup like she wanted.

Eventually, I decided just to take her to Panera and started thinking about what was around there for me to eat.  As we drove to Panera, I saw Wendy’s and thought about their new Bacon & Bleu Burger.

Wendy’s was the fast-food of choice when I was growing up.  It wasn’t my choice, but my dad and brother loved it.  I used to tolerate it because I liked their salad bar.  I know that sounds odd coming from a carnivore, but I was never super wild about their burgers.  My tastes have changed in recent years and I don’t mind stopping in now and then for a burger.  I don’t do fast food often anyway, so trips to any one fast food joint are usually pretty far apart.

There are two Wendy’s locations in Portage.  One is on Centre Avenue near the airport the other is on South Westnedge just south of I-94 (there are also several Kalamazoo locations).  It worked out pretty good with J wanting to go to Panera.  You can get to Wendy’s from Panera without ever having to get back on Westnedge if you go through the parking lots in the area.

While their competitors have upgraded the dining experience at their stores, Wendy’s seems to be stuck in a rut.  The stores don’t look much different from the way  they did ten years ago and the decor is kind of out dated.  They have been trying out some new food items including the one I stopped in for today.

The Bacon & Bleu is one of Wendy’s famous square hamburger patties topped with thick cut applewood smoked bacon, real bleu cheese crumbles, sautéed onions, and a creamy steakhouse sauce.  I got a medium combo for a little over seven bucks without the onions.

I grabbed my sack to go because J was waiting in the car with her soup.  I didn’t have huge expectations for the sandwich because, after all, it is a fast food burger, but bacon and bleu cheese is my favorite combination on a burger.

When I unwrapped the burger, I was a little disappointed.  Of course, it looked nothing like the pictures.  J looked at it and just sort of wrinkled her nose.  She was going to steal a bite, but said it didn’t really look appetizing.  To me, it looked like fast food…and after I took a bite, it tasted like fast food.

The burger had almost no taste.  The “real” bleu cheese was very flat.  There was no tang at all.  The bacon didn’t taste any different to me than the bacon Wendy’s uses on their other sandwiches.  The burger, typical fast food burger with little flavor. I didn’t have very high expectations at all the Bacon & Bleu couldn’t even meet my low expectations.

The burger was fine.  It didn’t taste bad, but it wasn’t very good either.  I really think Wendy’s regular options have more flavor than this burger did.  I’m sure it could have just been the way it was cooked by this particular cook, but the bleu cheese should be the same in every store.

Again, not the worst thing I’ve ever gotten from a fast food joint, but not something I will be going back for.

Not bad for the price, and the service at this store is much better than the service at the 9th Street or Portage Street stores. Plus, their charges on your debit card are more accurate than the other stores.

Did SW Dining really waste their time on a review of Wendy’s???? Buhahahahaha

The review was more about the Bleu Cheese burger than anything. I usually only review fast food chains when they come out with a new sandwich or there’s something unique about that particular store….or there are not an abundance of locations of a particular chain in SW Michigan.

….but I do waste my time on a lot of things.
