Yup, I take on grocery stores too.  Being a somewhat decent cook, finding the ingredients I want at a price I can afford is always a challenge.  On top of that, J really likes her fresh fruits and veggies.  We’re not “organic” people, we just want things fresh.

We were spoiled in Lansing.  We shopped at Horrocks a lot.  When stuff was in season, it was fresh and cheaper…cheaper than Walmart.  I know there’s a Horrocks in Battle Creek, but it’s a half hour from where we live.  I’m sure we’ll make trips out that way, but it would be nice to have something closer to home.

Last week when we made our first Sonic we noticed a grocery store we had never been to.  Since Sunday was our explore Kalamazoo day, we decided to see if this market would meet our demanding needs yet fit our budget.

D & W Fresh Market has two locations in the Greater Kalamazoo area.  One is on Parkview Avenue in Kalamazoo.  The other is on Romence Road just west of Westnedge.  Since we live close to Portage, we chose to check that one out.

The outside of the building really gives it a look that sets it apart from the typical chain grocery stores.  It actually looks like a building more suited for something like Whole Foods.  That really got my hopes up that this was going to be a Whole Foods-like store.

That sort of changed when we got inside.  It was still clean and much better than the typical mega mart, but it didn’t have the snootieness that you would expect from a premium grocer.

We had to make a Starbucks stop at the in store kiosk before we got going, so we actually ended up going backwards through the store.

The first thing we noticed is that D & W isn’t all that different from a Meijer.  They carry the major national brands and their generic is Spartan brand which I bought a lot of at the various neighborhood grocery stores in Lansing.  We picked up some frozen dinners that were on sale for $1.50 or $2.00 which is at least a two dollar savings.  We’re not coupon clippers, but we do check the ads and stock up on sale items if it’s something we use.

We then headed to the meat section which was very small.  We were looking for some ground beef for dinner.  They didn’t have a whole lot to choose from, but, on the plus side, they did have a butcher working the counter.  We were making tacos, so premium ground beef wasn’t necessary.  I finally found a pre-packaged pound of beef for a little over three bucks.  I picked it up and we moved on.

We always stock dried pasta in the house just in case the mood for Italian strikes us and I don’t have time or feel like making fresh, so we hit that aisle and picked up a few boxes.  While there, we found some of those deals where you just add water and microwave.  J wanted to try some of those for work, so they went in the cart as well.

We finally made it over to the produce section and were really disappointed.  J picked up some green beans, but that was about it.  The stuff they had looked good, but it was a little pricey and there wasn’t a huge selection….at least not the selection we’re used to.

D & W Fresh Market is a really nice supermarket.  It’s easily one of the cleanest I’ve ever been in.  It’s laid out nice and they do have a pretty good selection.  The problem is, they don’t have anything Meijer doesn’t have and Meijer is a little bit closer.  Still, it is nice to have an option where the crowds won’t be as big.  I always had Kroger for that in Lansing.  Maybe D & W Fresh Market will be my quick stop here in Kalamazoo.

Thank God you didn’t go to the D & W on Parkview! All they have there is Snooty, judgemental, discriminatory, snobish people working there! It’s unfortunate to because I only live 2 blocks away and I have to travel to Meijer on Westnedge if I want a decent shopping experience!
