Five Guys Burger & Fries – East Lansing
My travels this weekend brought me close to Lansing. I had to drive around the city to get where I was going which is a good enough excuse for me to leave fifteen minutes earlier to check out the newest addition to my favorite burger chain.
Five Guys Burger & Fries is on Grand River Avenue in downtown East Lansing right across the street from Michigan State University. It’s not quite near I-96, but it was close enough for me.
The store took over a storefront that used to be Iggy’s Cafe, Roly Poly Rolled Sandwiches, and Take Two Authentics. If you’re coming from US-127, it’s near the end of the downtown stretch in a building that also has a Blockbuster, Jimmy John’s and a few other stores geared towards the college crowd.
The good thing about the location is there are actually some on-site parking spots. They’re metered, but in a parking lot that is shared by the businesses. There is also a back entrance which I believe also had some parking. Read more…
Carrabba’s Italian Grill – Portage
The work never ends. After spending most of the afternoon on Tuesday raking and thinking we had it under control, I woke up this morning to find the maple tree decided it wasn’t done giving.
After a couple more hours outside we sat down to relaxing realizing neither of us had eaten lunch. I still had a gift card that was good at both Carrabba’s and Outback and since we used half of it at Outback last time, we got cleaned up and headed towards Carrabba’s to use the other half.
Carrabba’s Italian Grill is part of the OSI Restaurant Partners. The chain originated in Houston, TX in 1986. It expanded to 10 stores seven years later before OSI acquired the rights to develop the store on a national level.
The Portage location is on Westnedge Avenue just south of I-94. It actually shares a parking lot with Red Robin. We had to do a little time killing before we actually went to dinner because they don’t do lunch during the week. The restaurant opens at 4:00 and once again, we were among the first in the store at exaclty 4:00. Read more…
Kalamazoo Foods Market Opening in December
This morning I got an e-mail newsletter from Fair Food Matters. I usually skim through it and not find much that I hadn’t already gotten from them via press release. This time, however, something caught my eye. I don’t know if I missed a release or what, but this sounds pretty interesting.
You’ll find local, hand-crafted and home-grown baked goods, vegetables, meats and more at the Kalamazoo Foods Market. This new indoor retail market, located at the corner of Burdick St. and Crosstown Parkway, opens Saturday, December 4 (9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.).
A winter market? Nice. I know I haven’t been really paying attention to things lately, but somehow, this totally slipped under my radar.
Red’s Rootbeer
The owner of Red’s Rootbeer has requested I removed all pictures that I took on my visit. Apparently, they the found the pictures of their own food unappealing and requested I use their promotional shots instead. I’m not leaving a glowing review of the place up without the pictures I took, so the post has been removed.

The idea for Restaurant Week began in larger cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Miami. Grand Rapids, which has nearly 1 million residents, decided to launch Restaurant Week Grand Rapids to highlight great restaurants in this city, which has one of the top 20 culinary schools in the nation. According to Doug Small, “The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education produces some great talent that stays in the community. Combine that with the fact that Grand Rapids is just 30 minutes from the Lake Michigan shore and includes a cosmopolitan environment within a “not too big, not too small” geographic area. It’s a compelling mix.”
Many younger residents have chosen Grand Rapids over bigger cities to the east and south – Detroit and Chicago – due to its unique quality of life offering, including an innovative art culture and numerous culinary opportunities.
San Chez Bistro
Yup. Going to Grand Rapids on my day off. J talked me in to this one. A few weeks ago, I drove by the mall and noticed signs for a The North Face store. We both heard radio advertisements that the store was opening on October 29 and today was the first day since then that we could make the trip north together.
Before shopping, we needed lunch.
A few weeks ago, J and her mom went to Grand Rapids on a Saturday for Art Prize. My hope was that I could sneak away from work for an hour to go to dinner with them. Of course, that didn’t work out and I got really jealous when I found out they went to San Chez for dinner.
I was tipped off to San Chez when we first moved to Lansing. One weekend, J and I took a trip to Traverse City then came back to spend the day checking out Grand Rapids. We were still pretty new to the area and I asked for restaurant recommendations on my blog. A fellow blogger told me about San Chez, but we were unfamiliar with tapas and got scared by the menu, so we passed. Stupid mistake. Read more…
Gazette’s Reader’s Choice
The Kalamazoo Gazette’s Reader’s Choice came out yesterday. I have to admit I cried a little bit when I read it. Not because my choice didn’t win. Because McDonald’s did. Seriously. It depresses me that either 1.) There’s apparently nothing better in Kalamazoo or 2.) People are that dumb. I don’t know which one would actually depress me more.
I’ve lived in quite a few cities and all newspapers do this. Most newspapers keep it local. The Gazette opens it to every restaurant. That’s fine if that’s what they want to do. It’s just super depressing that people actually think McDonalds is the best Kalamazoo has to offer.
On that note, I may as well throw out my votes so you can lampoon me the way I just lampooned the masses.
Best Local Sandwich
Gazette Reader’s Choice: B’Witched Deli – My Choice: The Strutt Cafe & Bar
The Strutt was a surprise to me. I had no idea what to expect but it actually became a favorite of ours. The sandwiches are fanstastic. The great crusty bread is what got me hooked. No matter how good the filling, if the bread is to plain, the sandwich isn’t complete. That’s not to say I don’t agree with the Reader’s Choice. I actually really liked B’Witched Deli and it would probably be number 2 on my list. We had a great meal one night at B’Witched and haven’t been back since, but only because we lived on the other side of town. Now that we live near the place, I would bet we’ll be there more often. As for the Reader’s #2 and #3 choices…Panera and Jimmy John’s…all I can say is, really?
Best Hot Dogs
Gazette Reader’s Choice: Coney Island – My Choice: N/A
I got to take a pass on this one. I don’t eat hot dogs. Happy to see a local joint win, but I’ve gotten some feedback today that some people are surprised Ray Ray’s Italian Beef is not on the list.
