Friday night’s dinner break turned out to be more of a hassle than I had hoped.  I tried three times to leave for dinner only to get called back to work for something.  I intentionally didn’t bring a lunch because a new sub shop opened in downtown Grand Rapids that I wanted to try.  Hey, at least it’s not a burger, right?  Or is it?

Subs-N-More is now a three store West Michigan sub shop with it’s newest location in the McKay Tower on Monroe Center in downtown Grand Rapids.  The address is listed as Monroe Center NW, but the front entrance to the shop is actually on Pearl Street.  146 Monroe Center is the address for the McKay Tower.  While there’s an entrance on Pearl Street, you can also walk through the building and get to the shop from the inside.

The large space is set up with a number of tables taking up a majority of the space.  The order counter is in the back with a small kitchen that consists of a conveyor oven and a couple of small workstations to build the sandwiches and pizzas that are available.

The menu is written on a series of chalkboards behind the counter.  I was a little overwhelmed at first, but quickly found a couple of sandwiches that sounded good.

While my intention was to not a have a burger, that’s exactly what my eyes were drawn to.  I ordered a 7″ Cheeseburger sub.  All the of the subs are made on home made bread which they also sell loaves of.  The sandwich is loose ground meat, bacon, garlic butter, tomato, cheddar cheese & mayo (which I left off).  The sandwiches are toasted in the conveyor oven then boxed up in a fashion similar to Mancino’sRead more…

Pretty sure I’ve mentioned several times on this blog how much I love Mackinac Island fudge.  Every time I get the opportunity to stop by a Kilwins, whether it’s in South Haven, St. Joseph, or anywhere else I can find one, I do.

J, her mom, L, and I headed over to Holland for J’s birthday.  We wanted to take her mom to New Holland Brewing for lunch then do some shopping at the Gap Outlet and Carter’s Outlet at the Holland Town Center.

When we parked downtown in Holland, we had a little bit of a walk back to the restaurant.  As we cross 8th Street to get to the correct side of the road, I happened to look in the window of a store and notice fudge being made. I looked up to see the Kilwins sign and my eyes lit up.

Kilwins’ Holland shop is located on the corner of 8th and College downtown.  It’s a rather large store full of chocolaty goodness.  J was picking up the bill back at New Holland so L, J’s mom and I hung out in front of the store hoping J would want to go in.  Read more…

Press Release – Fundraiser for Fulton Street Farmers’ Market

April 4, 2012

From a Promote Michigan press release…..

Upcoming Fundraiser at Tre Cugini to Benefit Capital Campaign

for Fulton Street Farmers Market Improvements

(GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan) – The Fulton Street Farmers Market (FSFM), located in the southeast corner of the Midtown Neighborhood, is the last remaining of three original Grand Rapids farmers markets established in the early 1900s. Originally constructed in 1922, the market has retained its regional popularity over the years. Drawing more than 10,000 patrons per week during the peak of the season, the market generates millions of dollars worth of revenue for local growers each season.

With the recent influx in “buy local” initiatives, the Fulton Street Farmers Market is seeing resurgence in both the number of participating growers and in customers. As such, the market is literally busting out at its seams. In 2011 a $2.6 million dollar “Our Goodness is Growing Campaign” was announced by the Midtown Neighborhood Association, to generate funds to provide much-needed infrastructure improvements to the space, including:

  • · Permanently covered, open-air sheds with increased water and electricity access points
  • · Reconstructed plaza with added space for seating, bicycle storage and vendor overflow
  • · A small LEED-certified building with indoor stalls for year round vending
  • · Traffic flow reconfiguration
  • · New parking area pavement, landscaping and striping
  • · Two sets of wheelchair-accessible restrooms
  • · Complete site re-grading to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards
  • · Upgraded heating / cooling systems, insulation and wiring
  • · Rebuilding of the east side retaining wall
  • · Storm water retention system reconstruction

“When complete, the renovated Market will offer a better overall experience, more capable of serving local neighbors, area shoppers and our regional farming vendors,” says Diane Griffin, Campaign chair. “Most importantly, the facility upgrades will provide a space where people can continue to enjoy the finest in locally-grown food, flowers and other goods.”

To date, nearly $2,100,000 of the project funds have been raised, leaving just $500,000 to go. Thanks to the strong fundraising efforts and a dedicated group of community leaders and volunteers, organizers broke ground on the underground infrastructure and permanently covered shed housing the outdoor vending stalls in November 2011 and will celebrate the grand re-opening of the open-air Market in May, 2012. But to complete the project, with a 2000-square foot, indoor, year-round building and wheelchair-accessible restrooms at both ends of the Market , the balance of the funds must be raised.

An upcoming fundraising event to benefit the Fulton Street Farmers Market “Our Goodness is Growing” campaign is:

I’m not a big Groupon fan.  It’s great for consumers, but I hate how cheap people are.  The whole idea is to get people in the door, but unfortunately, most people only spend what they have the coupon for and never go back thus, giving the small business they’re supposed to be helping a loss.  I think I’ve only ever bought one and I stopped checking a long time ago to see what the deal of the day was.

J, however, checks the deals most days.  This week, I’m really glad she did.

On Thursday, J checked Groupon like she does most mornings and was a little confused with what she saw pop up.  The deal was for Sunset Blvd. Brewing Company in Kalamazoo.  How the heck did a brewery open in Kalamazoo and we missed it?

There’s actually a pretty good answer to that question.  The pub opened the week after L was born at the end of January.  Almost two years after the brewery was originally announced in the summer of 2010, the owners finally got all the paperwork done and moved in to the old R. Stanley’s location on Portage Road just north of I-94.

J and I used to live at Candlewyck Apartments just down the street on Kilgore Road.  I was pretty excited when I read the initial article in the Gazette, but had since forgot about the place.  When J told me where the brewery was located, that all came flooding back.

J’s parents came for a visit and not long after they got here, J asked if everyone was hungry.  She initially suggested going to Old Mill Brewpub in Plainwell, but I really wanted to check out this new place, so I did my best to talk her in to it.  Read more…

Press Release – Sandhill Crane Vineyards Grand Opening

March 25, 2012

From a Sandhill Crane Vineyards press release….

Sandhill Crane Vineyards Announces the Grand Opening of Their New Addition
Saturday, April 7, 2012; Ribbon Cutting at Noon

Jackson, MI – March 23, 2012 – Sandhill Crane Vineyards, a family owned and operated winery in eastern Jackson County announces the Grand Opening of its new addition. The addition, which triples the original space, includes a new cafe’, small banquet room, commercial kitchen, and extended wine cellar/manufacturing area.

The Grand Opening celebration runs from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 7, 2012, with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony at noon on the front steps. The winery and cafe’ will be open that day for exploration, celebration, tours, and wine tasting.

Since its beginning, the winery has had a tradition of using only local wine grapes and other fruits — all are from a 2-hour radius in southern Michigan. The cafe’ is continuing in that tradition, with dozens of local suppliers providing cheeses, meats, milk, maple syrup, locally roasted coffee, breads, and many other ingredients. The cafe’ menu features seasonal sandwiches, salads, soups, appetizers, and desserts.

Winemaker Holly Balansag will be giving tours of the new cellar area on the hour.

To commemorate the day, the winery is releasing “840,” a new port-style wine made with estate-grown grapes. This wine was aged in very special French oak barrels. It’s rich and not too sweet, with notes of vanilla. It pairs beautifully with rich duck dishes, blue cheeses, and indulgent desserts like tiramisu. The cafe’ will have several specials available that day to pair with the new port.

The winery, which opened in late 2003, was the 40th winery in the state of Michigan. It is now one of more than 90 wineries in the state. The wine industry in Michigan is a terrific example of agriculture- and tourism-based businesses that are growing despite the economy.

Free admission. There is no charge for tours and wine tasting. For more information call 517.764.0679.
