On top of the overtime shifts I picked up Thursday and Friday nights, I had an all day thing on Saturday. I had to drive to Lansing but that just added a couple of hours to what was already going to be a lucrative week.
I worked most of the afternoon in downtown Lansing getting done around 6 PM. I still had some things to do but I figured it would be easier to do computer work sitting at my kitchen table back in Kalamazoo than try to do it in my car parked alongside the road in Lansing.
I hadn’t really eaten much all day so I was pretty hungry by the time I was wrapping up. I had done a little pre-planning to try to find something outside of downtown but also not too far out of my way along my route back to I-69.
I was kind of in the mood for wings so I searched that first. Lucky me. I found a place.
King’s Wings & Deli is on the corner of St. Joe Highway and Creyts Road in the unincorporated community of Waverly in Delta Charter Township just to the west of Lansing. The small, multi-tenant building next to a Quality Dairy is just to the west of the intersection. It sits right between a Sir Pizza and a Subway. The space was a carry-out Chinese restaurant for a long time before this wing joint moved in. There are still some Chinese options on the menu, namely fried rice, so not sure if this is an extension of the old restaurant or just a coincidence.
I put my order in online for 15 wings and fries before I left downtown Lansing. I needed gas and something to drink so I had planned to stop along the way. Lucky for me, there was a Speedway right across the street. By the time I got gas and grabbed a Pepsi, it was time to head across St Joe Highway to pick up my food.
The restaurant is very basic with white walls and white tile floors. There is an order counter a few steps inside the door. There was a woman standing there waiting and asked if I had the carry-out order. I said I did, so she turned around and grabbed it from the window to the kitchen then grabbed a can of Pepsi from the cooler next to the cash register.
There is a very small dining area consisting of two four tops pushed up against the large windows that look out in to the parking. I could have sat down and ate but I was ready to get home.
Obviously I wasn’t going to try to eat wings in the car. I left that box sealed up and in the bag until I could get back to Kalamazoo.
I could eat the fries though. I was really hungry so I popped that box open as soon as I got back to the car. They were frozen crinkle cut fries with a heavy does of seasoning salt. I usually just kind of pass these off as “meh” but these fries actually had some taste to them. The were cooked really crispy which gives this kind of frozen fry a really great texture and contrast with the crinkle’s being crunchy and the potato in the middle being soft and airy. Maybe I was just really hungry or maybe these fries were just really good. Guess we’ll never know for sure but at this moment in time, these basic crinkle cut fries were really good.
When I got home, I immediately opened and flattened out the Chinese take out box full of wings. There were fifteen big, juicy, and even after an hour drive crispy wings covered in a thick Buffalo hot sauce. I was a little bummed I could only get one sauce. If I could only get one sauce, the Buffalo hot is the way to go for me. This sauce was slightly hot and had a really good peppery taste to it. It isn’t the kind of sauce that is going to light my mouth on fire but it’s spicy enough to make me reach for a glass of water. I was pretty hungry when I ordered these but even then, fifteen was almost too many. I powered my way through though and enjoyed every last bite of these tasty wings.
The cost of my meal was just a bit over $20 and I got quite a bit of food for that price.
King’s Wings & Deli is a pretty standard carry-out wing joint. You don’t see a lot of these now that places like Buffalo Wild Wings and Wingstop have taken over the market. This place has a pretty good selection of sauces and they don’t skimp on the wings. This was another totally random find for me but it was a random find that proved to be tasty.
