Wednesday at the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships was L’s day to skate. B was done for the week and he could just hang out with his friend from Florida he gets to see like once a year.

L’s schedule was somewhat compact for the day. Her first event was at 8 am and the last started around 1 PM. She surprised herself and podiumed in that first event so I hung around The Olympic Center for a while to see her get her medal.

I wasn’t really feeling very good so I kind of just kept to myself and sat in the stands during the break. There was other skating going on and it was nice and cool in the arena. It was surprisingly humid all week in Lake Placid and it could be uncomfortable outside.

I started to get hungry though and didn’t really want a burger from Roamers Cafe. I decided to venture out. There was still a pizza place not too far away that J and L had been raving about for the past year.

Bazzi’s Pizzeria is on Main Street on the south end of downtown Lake Placid across the street from the Golden Arrow Resort. The restaurant is one of several businesses on the main floor of a large three story brick building that has winter sports icons along the roofline. There are a few picnic tables out front and these were the tables we used earlier in the week when we got breakfast at Soulshine Bagel. The exterior has kind of a lodge feel to it which is on theme in the mountains.

There is a menu hanging outside that shows that Bazzi’s has more than pizza. J had walked to Bazzi’s several times already throughout the week and brought back pizza slices every time. L had been raving about this place since last year and she and J went without B and me. L has never been to New York City so she’s never had a real New York slice (not even from Sbarro’s) so this was a new thing to her. I love slice places and this place had been on my short list all week.

The order area is to the back as you walk in. It’s kind of cramped and not a lot of space. A partial menu hangs behind the counter from a board hung from the ceiling. It was around lunch time when I walked in so there were actually quite a few locals who stopped in for lunch. The large lacrosse tournament that took over the downtown at night was out at the lacrosse fields so getting in an out of restaurants was a little more manageable during the day.

You can order a whole pizza but the thing J really loved about this place was the slices. It’s kind of set up like a New York slice place with metal trays of pizza in a cabinet waiting to be selected. The pizzas were on the bottom shelf and the calzones were on the top. It was a little hard to see the pizzas but I saw a whole pie of sausage and pepperoni and asked for two slices. They were thrown on to a paper plate then tossed in to an oven to crisp up. By the time I paid the $8 for the two slices, the paper plate was being handed over the counter to me.

I could have walked back to the arena but I still had some time so I just chose to sit in the dining room and eat. The dining room is pretty generic with a neutral tile floor, ceiling fans for lights, and some generic art work hanging on the walls. There is a mix of booths and tables with heavy wooden chairs.

I love a good, crispy New York slice and that’s exactly what I got from Bazzi’s Pizzeria. I pressed my thumb right in the middle of the crust and folded it over to make it easier to eat. The slices had a good amount of the sausage of pepperoni on top that created a little bit of grease that blended in to the flavor of the sauce. New York slices like this aren’t something we have in Michigan so even though we were about four hours from New York City, we still had access to really delicious New York slices whenever we needed a quick, cheap, delicious meal.

Bazzi’s Pizzeria is a great option for a quick meal just up the road from The Olympic Center. I had contemplated going to sit down for a meal at one of the nearby bars but I really wasn’t feeling great. Bazzi’s Pizzeria was perfect on this particular day. It gave me some energy that I desperately needed and it was a really delicious slice of pizza.
