Pizza Hut (Gull Road)
Back home but just for a few days.
The last month has been pretty hectic. We’ve had back-to-back-to-back travel weekends for skating. It started in Detroit (Canton), moved to Nashville, then finished up in Chicago (Orland Park).
We got home from Nashville on Sunday evening then turned around to head to Orland Park, IL Wednesday night.
L was in her last week of Athletic Mentors in Richland. They’re moving it back to Wings Event Center now that they have a little bit of space with the ECHL season being over in Kalamazoo.
Tuesday night was the last night I was going to drive out to Richland to pick her up. She had gotten a ride there with one of her teammates but asked if one of us would pick her up.
I had quite a bit of time after I got off work before I needed to be in Richland and I hadn’t eaten much. It was a pretty busy day at work and I think the most I was able to eat was a beef stick and a Pepsi from the gas station.
I didn’t really have a taste for fast food burgers and in the middle of the afternoon, I got an email from Pizza Hut with a pizza deal that was cheaper than anything I’d get from a drive thru so I went with that.
The Pizza Hut I chose to stop at was the one on Gull Road near Gull Run Drive across the street from Meijer in Comstock Township. The pizza shop is part of a strip mall that also includes a Panera Bread. This location has been around about fifteen years. It was actually a Starbucks before a new building was built right next door and Starbucks moved over there. It’s one of the newer carry-out focused Pizza Huts that started replacing the old red roofed buildings like the one down the street that is now Rooster’s Call.
The deal I got in my e-mail was for a large three topping pizza for $10. I put in an online order for a large hand tossed pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and jalapenos. The cost with tax was just a little over $10 and they gave me an ETA of about fifteen minutes…which is about the time it would take me to get to this Pizza Hut from my office downtown.
The store is laid out with carry-out as the focus. There is an order counter right inside the door when you walk in. I found a lady standing there waiting for me when I walked in. She found the order on her computer then headed to the back to find it. I was a little bit early as it was just about to come out so I took a seat to wait. It was boxed up and ready to go about five minutes later.
If you still crave the Pizza Hut dine-in experience, there are a few booths in the shop. It’s not like going to Pizza Hut in the 90’s but if you really want that pizza straight out of the pan, there are a handful of booths along the wall.
I’ve been ordering the Tavern Style crust lately but I was hungry and I knew I would polish off that thin crust and still be hungry so I ordered a hand tossed instead. The hand tossed isn’t as thick as the pan style or as thin as the tavern crust. It’s a little doughier. The handle actually has a pretty good crunch to it so you get some of that doughy and some of that crunchy on the crust.
I’ve been getting sausage and pepperoni a lot when I order pizza just for myself and since I knew no one else was going to eat this one, I also added jalapenos because I needed that third ingredient. I always like a little bit of a kick on my pizza and whether that’s from red pepper flakes or peppers doesn’t really matter. Since I was eating alone, the jalapenos was a nice way to get that.
I’ve written a lot about the nostalgia of Pizza Hut for me. It was my favorite pizza place growing up for a number of reason…Book It being the biggest reason I could get my parents to go there instead of Monicals. $10 for a large pizza is really hard to beat nowadays. I couldn’t even go to McDonalds and get a comparable amount of food for that price. I like Pizza Hut pizza so this was a no brainer for me. I don’t do the dine in at Pizza Hut thing anymore so which one I pick it up at doesn’t really matter. This just happened to be the one along my route on this particular Tuesday night.
