It seems like this fall has become taco Friday instead of pizza Friday.

I always work a lot of overtime on Friday nights in the fall.   I usually go out of my way to find new pizza places in whatever town I’m going to work in but I seem to be running out of new pizza places.

I’ve been finding a lot of Mexican places instead.  I have a love for tacos so I’m not bothered by the surprising revelation at all.

This past Friday night I was working in the southern part of Kalamazoo County.   Whenever that happens, I tend to find dinner in Portage as I’ve tapped out places like Schoolcraft and Vicksburg.

I drove down Portage Road to get to where I was going because there’s a Mexican restaurant in the very southern part of Portage that I’ve never been to.  I’ve driven by many times but never when I could stop in for a meal.

La Finca Mexican Restaurant is on Portage Road just north of Osterhout Avenue.   The small stand alone building is right next to what used to be Chicago Style Pizza (which is becoming Kalako Pizza soon) and Great Skate Roller Rink.

I was happy to see they had online ordering so I was able to put my order in when I stopped for gas at the Speedway a little further north on Portage Road. I kept it simple and just ordered myself 4 tacos.

I’m going to talk very quickly about pricing and why it’s taken me so long to stop at this restaurant. The tacos are $4.75 which seems really expensive to me. Most places sell tacos for $3-$3.50 a piece. The $4.75 price is usually reserved for something like Barrio or Condado that does more than simple street tacos. The four tacos cost me $19.

The order wasn’t quite ready when I walked in the door. There is a small counter right inside and there were a number of orders waiting to be picked. It just so happened there was someone with the same name as me and the waitress grabbed that box but it hadn’t been paid for yet so luckily I caught it. Otherwise I would have had a burrito for dinner instead of tacos.

This building used to be a breakfast joint named Kaps Kitchen and the layout shows that. The dining room isn’t realy anything fancy. Neutral colors on the floors and walls with a yellow accent chair rail. The restaurant was pretty busy on Friday night showing I’m not the only one who didn’t go for Friday night pizza.

I only waited a couple of minutes before the waitress brought out the correct to-go order. I grabbed the box then went to eat in the parking lot of my next job site.

The four tacos came in the traditional Mexican street taco style with two soft corn tortillas, chopped steak, cilantro and onion. There were also two containers of hot sauce in the Styrofoam box.

The tacos were delicious and hit that craving that I had pretty much all day. They weren’t exploding at the seams with meat but there was a good portion in each of the tortillas. The meat was tender and bursting with flavor. The hot sauce was a little thicker than typical which I always like. The red sauce added a nice kick to each bite.

I really enjoyed the dinner from La Finca Mexican Restaurant…it was just a little more than I typically pay for tacos. The other things on the menu didn’t seem to be priced as high so not sure why the tacos are. I know everything is expensive right now and I knew the price going in so I’m not complaining. From a flavor standpoint, every thing was delicious and I would definitely order them again. This is a place I’ve been wanting to try for a while and I can finally check it off my list.
