Jersey Giant Subs (Battle Creek)
Friday night has always been pizza night and I usually tried to keep that going with my Friday night overtime in the fall.
That hasn’t been the case much this year. I’m running out of new pizza places as I’m getting sent back to places I already go to pretty often.
Last week, I was sent to the west side of Battle Creek. I didn’t even try to find pizza. I knew there were a couple of restaurants on that side of town I haven’t been to yet and both of them sounded good.
I picked one of my all time favorites, Jersey Giant Subs.
The Jersey Giant Subs location in Battle Creek is on Columbia Avenue at Helmer Road. There’s a little shopping plaza on the southwest side of the intersection. There are quite a few food options tucked in to this location on the edge of town. Island Style BBQ and South Side Grubz a couple of the other occupants.
If you’ve been in one Jersey Giant Subs, you should know what to expect at all of them. This one in Battle Creek is pretty much identical to any of the other JGS locations in southwest Michigan.
There is a long order counter where you order your sub then the meats and cheeses are sliced fresh in front of you. The sandwich moves from there to the toppings station which has a few, limited options of veggies to fill out the sandwich.
My favorite part of the toppings is a bit of an extra thing. The Chicago-style giardiniera is a buck extra but so worth it in my opinion. I love that stuff and will almost eat it straight out of the jar.
There’s a small dine in area which the name of the chain plastered across the wall in big letters. Again, this is pretty much a carbon copy of all of the other location so nothing really out of the ordinary.
I ordered The Jersey Giant. I got the full sandwich on white bread. The meats are ham, capicola, and salami plus the cheese. I topped it off with lettuce, pickles, Jersey Juice and giardiniera. The cost was right around $15 for a sandwich that could really feed two people.
I headed to the job site to eat dinner and wait for the work to start. When I picked up the first piece, I noticed something was a little off. Instead of Jersey Juice, I got mayo. Not the ideal but also not the end of the world either. It changed the flavor drastically from what I was expecting but it didn’t stop me from eating the whole thing. I had skipped lunch knowing that Jersey Giant would likely be my dinner stop and I would just eat a sandwich to make up for it.
I love Jersey Giant Subs. It’s by far one of my favorite sandwich places. The addition of mayo threw me off a little on this particular night but at least it was pretty light mayo. Mistakes happen. Not a big deal. I still enjoyed my dinner and can’t wait for my next Jersey Giant sub.
