McGonigles Deli West
I met a colleague in Battle Creek last week to do some work downtown. We started talking lunch spots almost immediately since he wasn’t super familiar with the area.
I rattled off a few downtown places and he seemed intrigued. He didn’t invite me to lunch though so I hopped in my car and started heading back to Kalamazoo.
It wasn’t that big of a deal. You know I had someplace I wanted to stop anyway.
I kind of took the long way back to I-94 because I did….of course…have someplace I wanted to stop.
I ended up at McGonigles Deli West on Gougac Street near 21st Street in Springfield. The shop bills itself as a deli, market, and pizzeria. This is the second McGonigles deli location in Battle Creek. The other is on the northeast side of town on Capitol Avenue in Pennfield Township. This location used to be Kim & Lynn’s Meat and Cheese Market and a pizzeria before that.
The building is divided in to two spaces. The order counter for sandwiches and pizza is right as you walk in the door. I knew there was online ordering but I was already in the car driving when I remembered I wanted to go here so I just showed up and placed my order at the counter like it’s 1998 again.
The other side is the market and deli. There’s some shelving with some higher end pantry staples that takes up a big chunk of the space.
The back part of the room some deli meat selections and some fresh butcher counter meat. There’s also some frozen meat options in a freezer off to the side.
There’s even a small dine-in area in the front of the store if you’re not like me and don’t enjoy eating in your car.
I walked in the store fulling expecting to order myself a pizza. That’s really what I was in the mood for. But then I started looking at the sandwiches.
I ordered myself the Hot Pastrimi Panini. This sandwich is pastrami, pickles, mayo, brown mustard and habanero cheddar on rye bread that is pressed until it gets those little grill marks on either side. I can also do without mayo on sandwiches that have mustard but it wasn’t something I noticed too much on this sandwich. There was a good deal of pastrami between the two slices of bread and some really crunch pickles that gave the sandwich a sweet vinegary taste. This is a more than solid pastrami on rye.
The cost for my meal was was right around $13.
I really liked McGonigles each time I’ve eaten at the Pennfield deli so I was really anxious to get to this one in Springfield. When I’m in town, I’m on this side of town more than the east side so this one will be much easier to get to. I still need to try the pizza…it looks delicious….but for now, I’m super happy with the sandwiches and can’t wait for an excuse to get back and have another one.
