Saturday is typically errand day if we’re home. I usually do it by myself though. We spend a lot of hours not at home during the week and on Saturday’s, everyone kind of wants to veg out.

Sometimes, that vegging out just goes to far and we get nothing done. I typically grocery shop and do whatever else needs to be done along the way but then I get home and hit the couch.

We had a list of errands that needed to be done this past Saturday. J and I decided it would be family errand day and it would end with a sweet treat.

We got the kids in the car…amidst a lot of whining and complaining….and did what we needed to do before the grocery shopping trip. We promised the kids waffles and ice cream if they would stop with the whining and just go along with it.

We had a plan, of course. That plan was Schultz Sweets.

Schultz Sweets is on West Main Street just to the west of 9th Street in the Kasten Center shopping plaza across the street from Menards. Schultz Sweets took the large end spot closest to the road. Prior to becoming a sweet shop, this space was Locey Swim & Spa so you know they had to do a ton of work to turn this in to a confectionary.

The name Schultz should ring a bell for most Kalamazooians. The same family behind Schultz’s Treat Street is behind this new location in Oshtemo Township.

Where to start? There’s so much going on here.

We walked in with the idea of getting lunch first and treats after that. We’ve been seeing posts on their Facebook for a quite a while about their gourmet waffles. The kids love waffles so that’s how we got them out of the house. J and I knew they likely weren’t going to finish them so we each got something that wasn’t a waffle.

Ordering is done at a counter near the middle of the space. The cash register is flanked by ice cream on one side and chocolate on the other.

The food menu isn’t on their website but you can find it on their Facebook page if you dig a little bit. It’s also hanging behind the cash register along with all of the drink and ice cream options.

We put in an order for two waffles, a sandwich, and a salad plus three drinks. The cost was just over $53 before tip.

There are a couple of sitting options. If you’re just getting a coffee or enjoying something simple, there’s a very cool lounge space with leather couches, swivel chairs and pub style tables.

That wasn’t going to really work for us to eat lunch so we sat in at the dining room tables that face the order counter.

It took about ten minutes for our meals to be brought out. There are board games on a shelf nearby and we started a game of Battleship between me and the kids. We got about halfway through when a large try of food was brought out to the table.

Like I mentioned above, J and I passed on the waffles knowing the kids likely wouldn’t finish theirs.

I ordered the Kickin’ Chicken sandwich. This thing is made up of warm chicken salad with a blend of “kickin'” spices and topped with pepper jack cheese. The sandwich is a pretty simple panini with a pretty tasty chicken salad between the bread. There wasn’t much heat to it but there was quite a bit of flavor. The sandwich came with a pickle spear and choice of chips. I picked the Miss Vickie’s Salt & Vinegar and gave them to L thinking she would want more than a waffle.

J went with a salad. She picked the Nuts & Berries Salad. This bowl is house greens, fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, house made cinnamon pecans, goat cheese and dressing. The cashier pitched their house made ranch but J went with a balsamic vinaigrette. J loves this kind of salad and was a little surprised at just how big it was and how many berries came sprinkled on top. She ate about half and took the rest home for a later meal after sampling some of B’s waffle.

I’ll start with the boring waffle here because I’m still not sure why she chose it. L just got a Plain Waffle which comes with maple syrup and fluffed butter. The crispy, fluffy waffle was delicious. She used all of her butter and reached for some of her brother’s as well. She really liked it but I think she got a little bit of buyer’s remorse once she saw what B had.

B ordered the Evie’s Chocolatey Waffle. This waffle is topped with chocolate mousse, chocolate syrup, rainbow sprinkles, whipped cream and a cherry. B told us before we left the house he didn’t want a waffle. We got him one anyone and his eyes lit up when this was set down in front of him. This is where L realized her mistake. We let her take a big spoonful of the chocolate mousse and sprinkles and put on her waffle because there was on way B was going to eat the whole thing. We cut it up in the bite size pieces for him and he ate about half before getting a sweetness overload. The waffle did not go to waste and J and I both grabbed forks to reach across the table and finish off what B couldn’t eat.

Lunch was only half of our adventure at Schultz Sweets. There was still sweets that needed to be gotten.

B of course wanted ice cream so we let him get one tiny scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip. They have Mooville ice cream for scooping.

The rest of us walked around the store looking at the chocolate.

I was immediately drawn to the display case of truffles….

..and of course the fudge.

I didn’t get either though. I was kind of sweeted-out after finishing B’s waffle….but I will go back later for some chocolate.

J and L looked around the store grabbing a few different things. There were a lot of amazing looking options.

They both really liked the home made caramels so they grabbed a bag of those and a few other small things. We ended up with about $30 in sweets and ice cream before we walked out the door to go grocery shopping.

Schultz Sweets is a cool place with such unique offerings. The waffle selection on it’s own is worth making the trip but while you’re there, be sure to pick up some chocolate
