Fletcher’s Pub (Texas Township)

There’s always a plan. And there’s always a monkey wrench that gets thrown in to that plan.
J and L flew to Wichita for a figure skating competition leaving me and B at home. I work too late at night to pick B up from daycare so I always have to come up with something else.
My mom offered to come up from Illinois for two days so she would be here when he got home from school and I would take two days off from work.
Then we got a snow day. My mom wasn’t planning on leaving until Tuesday morning so she wasn’t going to make for me to go to work. I ended up taking a PTO day to stay home with B because J and L had to get to Detroit to catch a flight.
I texted my mom and told her not to rush. It was still icy out so I told her to take some time and just come later in the afternoon. I would still need her Wednesday so I didn’t have to take another PTO day.
She got to town around 2:00. We hung out at home for a while then I got hungry. I figured since I was home, we may as well go out to eat.
I knew I wanted to go to a pub but nothing was really sticking out to me. I thought about University Roadhouse because it was close to home and that, in turn, gave me another idea.
I picked Fletcher’s Pub in Texas Township. It’s still pretty close to home and it’s a little bit more of a relaxed atmosphere than University Roadhouse.
Fletcher’s Pub is part of the Houz Restaurant Group which also operates the Main Street Pubs, Old Goat Tavern, and University Roadhouse. There are two Fletcher’s Pub locations. One is on Oakland Drive in Kalamazoo. The other is in Texas Corners on Q Avenue near South 8th Street. The pub used to be just down the street where Louie’s Corner Bar is now. They moved to this location a few years back when this little shopping plaza was built. Fletcher’s takes up the space furthest from the road.
Tuesday night was not a really busy night but we happened to walk in the same time as someone getting there for a large party. The party table wasn’t set up yet and the hostess started grabbing menus to get that going. A manager saw us and another party also standing at the host stand and he came over to get us seated.
The pub is pretty large and set up like a typical sports bar. There is a large bar area with TV’s hanging from the ceiling.
We were taken to a booth right off the bar area. The man seating us offered us either a table or booth but the tables in this area were pub tables and I don’t always like dealing with B and the taller chairs. We took the booth and he and I started in on our game of Tic Tac Toe as soon as the host set down his kid’s menu.
I didn’t see a beer list anywhere and I didn’t ask. I just stuck to Pepsi as I figured this was going to be a pretty quick meal and I didn’t really need a beer anyway.
The burger options on Fletcher’s menu aren’t really my thing. There’s only a couple of options and they all have some kind of fried onions or mushrooms on them. I could ask to leave it off or just do the simple burger and build it up the way I like it, but I decided to go with a sandwich instead.
I picked the Cuban Pork Sandwich. It’s my typical go-to sandwich when I don’t order a burger. This sandwich is a toasted hoagie roll with roasted pulled pork, shaved ham, Dijon mustard, jalapeno sweet pickles and Swiss cheese. I love a Cuban sandwich. This one was pretty solid. I didn’t realize the pickles were supposed to be hot. They kind of got lost in the vinegariness of the mustard. There was a lot of pork sandwiched between the two slices of bread which was toasted up nice and crispy. The sandwich came with fries. Fletcher’s fries are a battered, seasoned fry. They were fine, but battered fries aren’t always my favorite. They were a good compliment to the meal but wouldn’t have been my first choice.
B ordered the grilled cheese off the kid’s menu. My mom kind of argued with me a little bit about dinner because she wanted to go somewhere B would eat….but I didn’t want McDonalds. He seemed excited about the grilled cheese but only ate most of one triangle. He didn’t complain about it…..this is just what he does. I did find it a little odd the grilled cheese was made with whole wheat bread. I thought that was fine but that may have been the turn off for him. He didn’t make a big deal out of it so maybe it was fine. He just doesn’t eat when we go out to dinner and it’s super frustrating. He got applesauce as his side and ate about half of the pretty large bowl. The kid’s meals come with a free dessert if you ask for it. I asked him if he wanted it and he said no so we passed on it.
My mom got the Nuts and Berries Salad. She only did the half and it was still a lot of food. The bowl is lined with romaine lettuce then topped with grilled chicken, bleu cheese, cranberries, pecans, and served with a raspberry vinaigrette. She really liked the salad and said it was way better than McDonalds. She still offered to take B to McDonalds if he was still hungry after not eating his meal but I said no to that.
Our bill was right around $40 before tip.
We’ve always treated the Houz Restaurants as kind of a go-to when we just want a solid meal. We ordered from the Main Street Pub on West Main a lot during the pandemic. I really like their wings, but I passed on them this night for a sandwich. I like this version of Fletcher’s Pub. It has a much different feel than the old one did. It’s a solid sports bar. We were looking for a quick, delicious meal and that’s what we got.
