I can’t leave Northern Michigan without fudge.  The kids just expect it now.

I had to go back to Mackinac Island for about half a day of work on Thursday but I’d be leaving with all the gear I hauled over on Tuesday.  I figured I had already missed my window for getting fudge on the Island.

No worries.  Mackinaw City has a lot of the same shops and even some other shops that don’t have Island shops.

I was already in downtown Mackinaw City to pick up a pizza at Fox’s Pizza Den.  I decided to streamline my exit from town on Thursday and just grab the fudge after I picked up my pizza.

There are several shops to choose from including well known place Joann’s Fudge, but I like new places and there was a really brightly painted place that caught my attention.

Sweet Spot is on Central Avenue in downtown Mackinaw City to the west of Langlade Street.  The small shop is tucked in to the row of buildings that cater to tourists after they get back from a day of sightseeing on Mackinac Island.  It’s hard not to miss the bright pink facade.

The Sweet Spot is more than just fudge. They’re part ice cream shop, part fudge shop, part candy store. There’s quite a bit of packaged and bulk candy in the store. If you knew nothing else about this shop, you’d think it was a top notch candy store.

But turn around and you’ll find a large case of ice cream with mult-color waffle cones and bowls.

Next to that is the fudge. And there’s a lot of it to choose from. It’s all wrapped up and ready to go home. They run a “special” of four slices of fudge for a little under $30.

There were several families hovering around the ice cream freezer so I squeezed past them and headed for the fudge. Of course, I got 4 slices.

The Rainbow Fudge was the first one I picked. I knew B would love it. It was just chocolate fudge but it was colored like Superman ice cream. B’s eyes lit up when I got this one home and he ripped in to it right away.

The second piece I got was also kind of for B although I think L likes it too. It was the chocolate mint. We’re always surprised when our kids order something with mint but both of them seem to like it.

The other two pieces were for J and I. I got one slice of Milk Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel. We both typically like milk chocolate over dark chocolate. This one had a dollop of caramel on top and some streaks of caramel streaked throughout.

I always grab a slice of Cookies and Cream wherever I go because that’s my favorite.

The fudge from Sweet Spot was really soft. I had another piece from The Grand Hotel and it was a completely different fudge from what I got from the Sweet Spot. The Sweet Spot’s was really soft and little bit of tension to the pull. All four slices were super tasty.

The cost for the four slices of fudge was right around $30 which is typical for Mackinac Island fudge. The bonus with The Sweet Spot is you get a large reusable bag when you buy the four slices. L was pretty excited about that bag.

There’s so much fudge in Mackinaw City and, of course, on Mackinac Island. For the most part, it’s all pretty much the same. There’s not a lot of difference in prices so it comes down to flavors. The older shops have a smaller selection but a slightly firmer fudge. The newer shops have dozens of flavors and the fudge is a little softer.

The Sweet Spot is a cool shop and has more than just fudge so if you (or your little ones) aren’t big chocolate people, this is the place to go. There are more options and all of them look really tasty.
