First weekend at the lake.

I had kind of an abbreviated Memorial Day Weekend with the family.  L had a workout class Saturday morning so we didn’t leave to go to J’s parents until after that.  We spent all of Saturday at the lake then had to come home Sunday because L had figure skating practice.

We left B at the lake and the three of us came home.  J and L left me at home then headed back to the lake afterwards to spend the rest of Sunday and Monday.  I was leaving Monday afternoon to head to Mackinac Island for the week so instead of taking two cars to the lake, I just came home Sunday when L had to come home to skate.

We grilled dinner Saturday night and let the kids swim.  Before bed time, we decided to run in to Sturgis and get ice cream.  J and her mom took the kids to a great ice cream shop in downtown Sturgis last fall and have been looking to go back ever since.

Freakin’ Sweets is on Chicago Road in downtown Sturgis.  It share a building with TC Appliance at Chicago Road and Clay Street.   They opened last year taking over a space that was a travel agency.   The shop grew in popularity pretty quickly and it caused some parking issues with the Manpower next door who actually own the parking lot.  Just to be safe, it’s suggested you park on the street.  Manpower doesn’t react really well to people parking in their lot.

We walked in to the ice cream shop around 7:30 on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend. The shop was busy but it wasn’t overwhelmed. There were a few people in line in front of us so we could take a few minutes to look over the menu.

The kids were content with just normal, run of the mill ice cream even though Freakin’ Sweets has a lot of other options. Most of the ice cream is from Plainwell Ice Cream but they do have a few other selections from Ashby’s, Moo-Ville, Michigan Made and Brown Dog.

Both kids chose to do Birthday Cake Ice Cream. L went with the waffle cone

And B we got the smallest cup they have. He complained about it being so small but it was actually perfect. He never finishes his ice cream and almost always makes a mess with it. He finished almost all of this smaller cup and his face and hands weren’t the sticky mess they usually are afterwards.

We decided to come to Freakin’ Sweets on this particular night because J saw a Facebook post about Ice Cream Nachos…so, yeah, that’s what she got. She got to pick two scoops of ice cream and toppings (she chose caramel and chocolate chips. The tray also came with both chocolate and vanilla waffle cones strips to eat the ice cream like you would nachos.

I was on the fence between a shake and an ice cream sandwich. They make amazing looking Freak Shakes but I didn’t really need all that sweetness. I chose the ice cream sandwich instead. You get to choose the cookies…which are made by Two Spoon Bakery in Mendon..and the ice cream they sandwich in between. I stuck to a simple Chocolate Chip Cookie with Cookies and Cream ice cream. I could have had it rolled in some toppings but the cookies and ice cream were enough. The cookies were soft but firm enough to hold up to the hard pack ice cream. The sandwich was huge. Almost too much for one person…but I was able to conquer it.

We stuck to ice cream but there are other sweets at Freakin’ Sweets.

Next to the cash register, there was a selection of cakes and cake pops.

Next to their is their semi-home made donuts. They don’t make the actual donut in house but they do make all the fillings and the toppings. By the time we got there at 7:30, the donuts had pretty much been picked over for the day.

The cost for all of our ice cream treats was right around $22.

I love Freakin’ Sweets. This is such a unique ice cream shop. They do the simple stuff but they also have some amazing creations if you want to get fancy. The kids love it not only for the ice cream but because they feel like they’re getting away with a swear word when they say the shop name. Downtown Sturgis isn’t too far from where my in-laws live and it seems like going in to town for ice cream is brought up every time we stay at their place for the weekend.
