My boss likes to send me to Sturgis from time to time because, I’m pretty sure, he likes to live vicariously through me. Hot ‘n Now was one of his favorite fast food joints growing up and the only remaining location is in Sturgis.

I obliged occasionally and pick up burgers but I’ve learned there are so many other delicious options in Sturgis. My in-laws moved to the area a few years ago and I’ve gotten to explore St. Joseph County a little bit more.

There are a lot of Mexican joints in Sturgis. I haven’t been able to try many of the places because we usually just order pizza when we’re at the lake if we order out.

I was in Sturgis last week for the day and I really didn’t plan on getting lunch My co-worker picked up a couple of slices pizza from a gas station when I stopped to find a bathroom and buy more Pepsi.

The longer we sat in Sturgis, the hungrier I got. I finally broke down around 3:00 and told my colleague I was going to get tacos.

I picked Carniceria Michoacan. This is actually a small grocery store on Chicago Road on the east side of town. The small building shares a parking lot with a laundromat near the intersection with Farwell Avenue.

Like I mentioned, the business is a small Mexican grocery store. There is a lot packed in to this small building. The aisles are pretty narrow and the shelves are overflowing with product. I didn’t need anything but I did look around a little bit. I typically go to a Mexican grocery store on the north side of Sturgis when I need something so I just wanted to look around a little bit to see if there was anything I couldn’t live without.

The restaurant part of the store is to the right when you come in. There’s a small lunch counter right in front of a small kitchen. There were a couple of guys hanging around when I walked in. They pointed me back to the cash register to order but no one was there so one of them grabbed an order pad and wrote down my order so he could get started on it.

The small menu is hanging above the grill. There are no prices on it but it lists the items they’ll make for your.

I’m pretty simple when it comes to these kinds of places. I just wanted tacos. I put in an order for four Asada tacos to go. The cook got to work right away while another person came out of a back room and rang up my order back at the front cash register.

It took about five minutes for my order to come up. They really just needed to warm up the tortillas and assemble the tacos with stead, cilantro, and onion.

I grabbed the tacos and we headed to a park to park while we worked. It was super hot out that day so we needed to find some shade.

The tacos were delicious. They came with little cups of hot sauce and it truly was a hot sauce. The meat was super tender and the tortillas were crisped up after a few minutes on the flat top. I love tacos like this. My co-worker was trying to tell me how great Taco Bell’s steak tacos are and I couldn’t even respond. My mouth was full of actual delicious steak tacos.

The cost of my four tacos was just under $12 so in addition to this being a delicious lunch, it was also a fairly cheap one.

Carniceria Michoacan is a fantastic, authentic taco shop in Sturgis. I wasn’t planning on eating lunch this day but I’m so glad I changed my mind. These tacos were everything I was hoping for and more.
