Serious Dogs
55 South 20th StreetI have definitely been paying more attention to Battle Creek lately. For years, I had a hard time finding new places or unique places. I found a Facebook group that opened my eyes to so many great places in Calhoun County.
I was in Battle Creek last week and spent most of the day in town. There was no going to back to Kalamazoo until our workday was over so I went looking for lunch.
I picked the place with online ordering. Serious Dogs wasn’t too far away from where I was from and I’m always about the ease of not talking to anyone.
Serious Dogs is on South 20th Street south of Territorial Road. This is a street in Battle Creek I don’t think I’ve ever been on…at least not in this area…nothing looked familiar despite the building being between Territorial and Columbia.
The restaurant sits pretty close to the road and has a very distinct look to it. I would have guessed the place used to be a Mexican restaurant but it was a place called Weezers Bar & Grill for several years before Serious Dogs moved in.
The layout of the restaurant is what really led me towards a past life as a Mexican restaurant. There are archways separating the dining areas. The walls pretty plain keeping with most of them white but there are highlights of Serious Dogs red and yellow colors throughout.
The ordering is counter service. There is an electronic menu board hanging above the cashier. There were a couple of ladies in front of me that appeared to be there for the first time. They asked a lot of questions as I was standing there just looking at my meal bagged up on a shelf behind the cash register.
So…the name of the restaurant is Serious Dogs and I ordered….a cheeseburger. In my defense, I read a lot of people raving about the burger…and I like burgers more than I like dogs. I order a coney dog on the side a lot of times but I just wasn’t feeling it this time. I ordered the BBQ Bacon Smash and added on an order of fries.
The BBQ Bacon Smash is made up of two Angus smash patties topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce, and a fried onion ring. The sandwich lived up to the hype. I pulled the onion ring off because I don’t really like onions…but the rest of it was delicious. The bacon was the really interesting part of this sandwich. It was a whole bacon patty so I got a big mouthful of bacon in every bite.
The burger came with kettle chips. I kept them instead of upgrading just because I was really hungry that afternoon. The chips are simple. Just kettle chips that likely came out of a bag..just a little more food for my belly.
Like I said, I was hungry…so I added on a large order of fries. My eyes lit up when I realized they were in their own to-go container but that feeling went away when I picked it up. It clearly wasn’t full of fries. There was a pretty large order of delicious, golden brown fries inside the container. I was pretty satisfied when I finished everything in the two to-go containers.
Serious Dogs is seriously good. I still kind of wish I had ordered a dog too but I’m just not a hot dog guy. I’m much more of a hamburger guy so I probably made the right choice. The burger was delicious.

Okay, so I checked out their website and the one thing that made my eyes roll was a breakfast hot dog … say what?? Who eats a breakfast hotdog?? Is that something someone actually orders or is it just a joke??
