It’s not very often I go to Marshall for work but I was there twice in two days earlier this week.  When I’m not at work and I go to Marshall, I go to Dark Horse Brewing.  When I’m at work and can’t drink, I really don’t know my way around the dining options in the city.

The first day we were in town, I headed away from downtown towards I-69. I saw an old sign in front of a small restaurant that snagged my attention.  On day two, I made time to stop and pick up something to eat.

Speedy Chick has been in Marshall for about fifty years.  The small building sits on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Plum Street west of downtown.  There’s not much space between the building and the road so I just pulled my car up as close to the sidewalk as I could get without blocking it.

The public area of the building is a lot like the parking lot…really small.  There’s a small room just inside the door with an order counter and four chairs up against the wall if you’re like me and order when you get there.  The menu is hanging above a window that peers into the kitchen and looks like it has been there as long as the restaurant has.

I needed to eat while I was in the car so I picked the Chicken Strip Basket.  I had the cash on me so I paid the little over $7 bill that way.

It took about five minutes once the lone employee went back into the kitchen for him to walk out with a bag of food.  My co-worker was waiting in the car and we had some things to do so I threw it in the back seat and opened up the Styrofoam so it would cool down a little bit.

I was hoping that since this place has been around for so long and they specialize in fried food, there would be some amazing, home made chicken strips inside.  There was not.

The basket is seven ounces of chicken, fries, and a biscuit.  Everything came out of a bag.  On the bright side, these are the kind of frozen chicken strips I like.  They’re flat ones that come out really crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle.  There’s not a lot of extra breading on them so you get a lot of chicken in every bite.

The fries.  They were fine.  Pretty simple frozen restaurant fries.  I declined sauce of any kind because I was in the car but they could of used some.  The biscuit was buttery and flaky.  Had I been sitting at home, I would have added a little more butter and it would have made it even better.

Speedy Chick is a simple restaurant.  It gets great reviews on Yelp and Google and they’ve been around for so long so they’re doing something right.  A lot of the reviews on this place are for the smelt…which I would never order, but if you like smelt, this sounds like the place to get it.  I like Speedy Chick because it’s simple and quick.  Next time I’ll try the fried chicken. I really didn’t have enough to have an opinion one way of the other on this place so I guess I’m going to have to make it a point to stop again next time I’m in Marshall
