Freddy’s Food Hut
Whichever City of Kalamazoo employee thought up Lunchtime Live deserves a raise. The Friday food truck rally has continued to grow every year with more trucks, more games, and more people. I look forward to it every Friday in the summer and am disappointed on the days I’m out of the office and not able to partake in the delicious foods sold from the back of a truck.
My co-worker and I started our day in Battle Creek but we were back in Kalamazoo by noon. I dropped off some stuff in the office and made way to Bronson Park to find something delicious to eat.
There are so many trucks lining South Street that it’s hard to choose just one. I look for one’s I haven’t tried yet first before going back to an old favorite. On this day, I saw one that was familiar to me, but one I had never eaten at before.
Freddy’s Food Hut is an extension of Unique Catering, Inc. in Kalamazoo. Chef Fred is a personal chef and uses the truck for events around Kalamazoo. The bright red truck serves “American Cuisine” including BBQ.
There were a few people in line ahead of me when I got to the park about 12:15. There are only two people working in the trucks. One is taking orders. The other putting it all together. The menu for this day was mostly BBQ and hot dogs, but they also had wings as a special.
I stuck to what I know and I love. I ordered a Smoked Brisket Sandwich and an order of Coney Fries without the onions. The cost was about $14 and I was able to pay with a credit card.
It took five to ten minutes from the time I ordered until I was handed a Styrofoam box bursting at the seams with food.
I started with the fries. They were simple crinkle cut fries that were super crispy. The fries were topped with a meaty, hearty coney sauce and shredded cheddar cheese. The crispy fries actually held up to the coney sauce really well. I would have liked a little mustard on the fries as well, but as they were, these were quite tasty.
The Smoked Brisket Sandwich was three slices of a very tender brisket flat. I asked for some BBQ sauce on the side but ended up not using it. The brisket had a lot of flavor on it’s own. The bark had become a little soft from it’s time spent in the warmer, but it still had a strong salt and pepper flavor to it. The sandwich was served on a wheat french roll.
Freddy’s Food Hut is my kind of food truck. They offer simple, delicious sandwiches and have a deep fryer so I can still get fries. I will spend so much more time at Lunchtime Live this year and I’m sure this truck will be there….and I’m sure that will mean another visit for some tasty BBQ.
Thank you so much! We’re so glad you enjoyed our food!
