Two things I love.  Tacos.  And 24-hour restaurants.  I’m a night owl.  I like being able to grab something to eat at 11:00 at night that isn’t McDonalds.

When we checked in to our hotel in downtown Los Angeles, one of the first things I noticed was a small taco joint just on the other side of the valet.  As we were walking to dinner one night, I noticed the 24-hour sign.

Tacos Mexico is a regional chain of tacos stands that got it’s start in the 1970’s as a food truck.  The first brick and mortar store came along in 1980 and that just happened to be the location that was next to my hotel.  It’s sort of located in a parking lot next to The Blackstone Building on Broadway Street south of 9th.  The building is a walk-up taco stand with a couple of tables on the sidewalk nearby to sit and eat.

The menu at the Tacos Mexico chain is pretty simple and exactly what you’d expect it to be.  I ordered four Beef Steak tacos with cilantro and onion.  I actually asked for the onion to be left off but the guy taking my order said they were already mixed so I just rolled with it.  I didn’t realize I was leaving salsa off too when I said I just wanted cilantro but apparently “everything” in cilantro, onion, and salsa.

The tacos cost me a little over seven bucks and they were reading within just a couple of minutes.  It was raining so I grabbed the foil package and walked back to my room at the hotel next door.

The foil contained four individually wax paper wrapped tacos.

The first thing I noticed was the size.  They were small.  We’re talking tortillas that were just a couple of inches wide.  Each taco had two of these small, grilled corn tortillas that were filled with a seasoned, chopped steak and a handful of the cilantro and onion mixture.

I was able to put away each taco in about two bites.  The four tacos were definitely not enough for a meal but more like a tasty snack.

Tacos Mexico is a place that just kept calling my name from the moment we pulled up in front of at the beginning of our trip.  I didn’t take advantage of it’s late hours but it did make a good snack before heading out on our workday.
