Tacos El Cunado at the Downtown Market
Hungry and early for work. What’s a guy to do? I was contemplating fast food, but as I was getting off US-131 at the Wealthy Street exit, I was struck with an idea.
I’ve been to the new Downtown Market in Grand Rapids a few times for work, but I’ve never really had a lot of time to look around. I did, however, remember that there is a taco place and I can never turn down tacos.
Tacos El Cunado has a couple restaurants in Grand Rapids, but their newest venture is at the Downtown Market. They have a kitchen set up right next to the Ionia Avenue entry doors.
The taqueria has a simple menu of tacos, quesadilla’s, burrito’s, and tortas. Even at almost three o’clock on a Saturday, there was a little line at the counter.
When it was my turn, I ordered four Carne Asada tacos with just cilantro. The tacos also come standard with onions and the option to add cheese for a small fee, but I love simple tacos.
The cost was a little under $10 for the four tacos. They run $2.50 $2.25 each which is a little higher than the place I normally get my tacos at in Grand Rapids. It took about five minutes or so for my name to be called and I grabbed the plate of tacos then headed to the small hot sauce bar they have set up on the back side of their counter. There is also some seating in this area and there is seating all over the market if you’re looking to eat there, but I had to get to work at this point so I headed back to my truck in the parking lot.
I had a lot of jealous co-workers when I got to the shop. For some reason, no one knew that there was a taco stand in the Downtown Market even though it’s only a few blocks away. I had a couple people hovering over me asking questions I started to dig in.
The tacos are made with two El Milagro corn tortillas and were filled with juicy, tender steak and the fresh cilantro. I topped each of the tacos off with a home made hot sauce that was pretty spicy, but not mouth burning.
Tacos El Cunado delivered delicious, fresh, authentic tacos. There are places to get cheaper tacos in town, but this location of Tacos El Cunado has an amazing spot inside the beautiful new Downtown Market.

Four Carne Asada Tacos
My husband and I were just there a week ago and loved it! We shared the steak tacos and chicken quesadilla. Delicious, and we are so thrilled that the Downtown Market is finally open! Great addition to our lovely hometown.
FYI: tacos are $2.25, not $2.50. And they do have combos that save you a little bit.
you are correct….will make the change. Sorry about the mix up
Haven’t been there in a couple of years because the service was so slow. But it was good.
