Before moving to Michigan, I had never had good fudge.  Now I can’t get enough of the stuff.

The first place we had good Mackinac Island Fudge was in Traverse City.  We were walking around downtown after lunch and came across a fudge shop.  We had never heard of it, but were mesmerized by the candy maker pulling fudge in the window.  We went in, promptly bought three wedges of fudge and have made it a point to stop at every Kilwin’s we come across.

As we were looking for a place to park in downtown South Haven, we came across another Kilwin’s.  It just so happened there was an open parking space in front of it so we pulled in.  I think it crossed both our minds to skip lunch and just eat fudge, but we didn’t go with that instinct.  Instead, we went to lunch at Clementine’s then stopped for fudge before heading to the beach.

The Kilwin’s in South Haven must be pretty new.   I had a hard time finding any information on the place.  There is no mention on the Kilwin’s website and the credit card transaction came up at Polyannas Confection.  What I do know about the place is that it is on Phoenix Street in downtown South Haven just east of Kalamazoo Street.  When I do a Google search for the address, I get a place called Whimsy and cross checking that with the Google Street view shows I do have the right address and the building did used to house the collectibles place. 

Kilwin’s is a full service candy shop, but all we were interested in was fudge.  There was a candy maker behind us as we stood at the display case making more of their famous fudge.  They didn’t have a huge selection at the time.  There was only about a half dozen different varieties.

We were offered a free taste of their chocolate fudge which I was going to get until I saw the Chocolate Peanut Butter fudge.  I got a wedge of that and J was intriqued by a wedge of Vanilla Fudge with home made caramel in the middle.  The name of the piece escapes me, but I know it was something along the lines of “South Haven Tracks”

Besides the famous fudge, Kilwin’s offers up home made ice cream and other hand made candy treats.  They have a large display case with truffles and other chocolates next to the fudge case.  The ice cream area is in the back.  We never made it that far and we have never made it that far in any Kilwin’s.  We always get stopped at the fudge.

Our two wedges of fudge cost a little over $15.  It’s not a cheap treat, but it’s so worth it.  Most Kilwin’s stores have a buy 2 get 1 deal, but that was never offered to us at the South Haven store and neither of us thought to ask.

J opened her slice of fudge right away, but I did my best to save it for later.  It still didn’t last a day.  It was gone by the time I went to bed.

I love Kilwin’s.  Really, I love any fudge but there always seems to be a Kilwin’s in tourist towns.  That’s fine with me.  If J and I play tourist for the day or weekend, I’m glad to be able to find something as decadent as a wedge of fudge from a great chocolate shop.
