Yesterday, when J and I went Christmas tree hunting, we passed a pizza joint on the corner of Sprinkle and Kilgore in Portage.  I remember seeing it when we moved to Kalamazoo, but J said she doesn’t remember seeing it.  For some reason, seeing pizza on the way to get a tree made J hungry for pizza.  I’m always hungry for pizza so we decided to go back for dinner.

Jaspare’s Pizza & Fine Italian Foods is fairly new to Portage.  The original location is on Main Street in Vicksburg.  This location is right on the corner of Sprinkle and Kilgore Roads in Portage.  There is access to the parking lot from either street.

We stopped in for dinner on a Thursday night around 5:30.  There were no cars in the parking lot and not much activity inside.  By the time we got inside, an employee was waiting for us at the cash register.  He pointed out a couple specials which were written on a dry erase board and handed us a paper menu to look over.

When it comes to pizza, J and I are pretty easy.  We like thin crust.  She likes plain cheese. I like pepperoni.  We’ll go for a specialty pizza every now and then, but more often than not, it’s a half cheese/half pepperoni.

Jaspare’s has three choices when it comes to crust size.  If you don’t specify, you get their medium crust.  We specified thin crust.  We got the predictable half cheese/half pepperoni and two fountain drinks.  They had the choice of either Coke in a bottle or Coke out of the fountain.  Since we were dining in, we chose the fountain.

The cost was a little under $17.  We took a seat in the dining room and waited for our pizza to be cooked.  They do an all-you-can-eat buffet for lunch and we actually took a table back by that buffet.  No reason, just where I chose to sit.

The dining room doesn’t scream pizzeria, but that’s not a bad thing.  You know how most pizza joints (especially ones with Italian names) like to decorate everything in red, white, and green stripes?  Jaspare’s didn’t do that.  They have a bright, comfortable dining room with solid furniture.  I even noticed our table had a little bit of paper stuck under one leg to level out it.  It’s just a small detail, but I think it shows something about the quality of the dining space.

Our pizza took about ten minutes.  The cook brought it out then grabbed us a couple plates off the buffet behind us.  There was no parmesean or red pepper flakes, but she grabbed some off a nearby table for us without being asked to.

The pizza was almost a New York style thin crust.  I picked up the first piece of pepperoni and used my thumb to fold it over.  The crust had a pretty good snap to it when I did this.

J mentioned that the pizza was good, but didn’t have any really stand out features.  It was a good pizza, but nothing made her say “wow” when she took a bite.  I countered with the crust.  We just got the plain crust (they have four options for free flavored crust), but I thought it had a nice crisp to it, and had a pretty good flavor.  Again, nothing overpowering or outstanding, but a really solid foundation for the pizza.

We entered Jaspare’s just wanting a decent pizza and I think we got better than that.  We were both happy with the pizza and we’ll keep the carry-out menu close by.  It didn’t have a “wow” factor, but it is a solid pizza and something I could see us ordering again.  The option for thin crust is what will keep us going back.
