You didn’t think I’d get out of Wisconsin without a Kwik Trip blog, did you?

Our last day in the Kenosha area started bright and early.  This was the last day of the Southport Summer Classic at the Pleasant Prairie Rec Plex.  Both kids were skating….finally.   B had been so patient waiting for his turn.

We had already stopped at Kwik Trip several times but it was one I blogged about last year so I didn’t have a chance to write a new one.  We were coming from a different hotel on Saturday morning and we needed breakfast so the plan was to stop at the first Kwik Trip we spotted.

That first Kwik Trip happened to be the location on 31st Street and Green Bay Road/Wisconsin Highway 31 in Kenosha.  The convenience store/gas station is in the parking lot of a Festival Foods.  It’s near the very busy intersection of Green Bay Road and 38th Street which is a very heavy industrial corridor.

We have been looking forward to this competition all year just because the three of us who went last year couldn’t wait to get to a Kwik Trip. This weekend was B’s first introduction to Kwik Trip and he’s already talking about going back next year just because the food options at these gas stations are so amazing.

The set up to Kwik Trips are like any other gas station/convenience store combo. They have everything you would expect to find at one of these road side stops. There are plenty of drinks, candy, and snacks that you can find anywhere else.

What makes Kwik Trip different is the amount of hot food they have at all times during the day. It’s just lined up on warming racks in the middle of the store. It doesn’t matter if you’re there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There will always be a pretty wide variety of options.

It was breakfast time so I went to grab a couple of breakfast sandwiches. They have lunch options that early in the morning as well if you want a burger.

There are also cold options all day like yogurt and salads.

And there is a big display of donuts. They even had the elusive white long john that my entire family, including me, tends to crave. We passed on the donuts pretty much all week but we did grab a box of their absolutely amazing cinnamon rolls to bring home when we stopped at a different location before we left town after the competition was over.

All of the locations are 24 hours but as I found out on a trip to Green Bay a couple of years ago, they don’t have hot food 24 hours. They do have quite a few cold/microwave options you can grab. I’ve gotten the cold chicken a couple of times (I have a weird liking for cold fried chicken) but there are take and bake pizzas and pasta dishes along with other entrees as well.

The kids always go straight for the F’Real milkshake machine. We obviously have these in Michigan but the Speedway’s never have the Smoothie options. L loves the Mango smoothie and she grabs one every morning when we stop at Kwik Trips. B started his morning with a milkshake. We protested a little and told him he could only get the vanilla one in hopes it would deter him without a fight. It did not. He was fine with the vanilla milkshake.

I was the only one that grabbed anything as far as hot food. I do like a good breakfast sandwich.

I ended up grabbing two different ones.

The first one I picked up was the Breakfast Burger which is more burger than breakfast but that’s fine. It was yummy. The sandwich is a hamburger patty topped with bacon and an egg. There’s not a lot to expect from a gas station sandwich and while it looks like a smashed mess of crap, it tasted really good for what it is.

The other sandwich I picked up was the Three Meat Breakfast Sandwich. All three meat were pork. It was bacon, a sausage patty, and a slice of ham with cheese. I think I got this sandwich every morning when we stopped so I liked it enough to keep going back to it. It was better than something like a sausage and egg croissant. Again, looks like a smashed pile of nothing in the picture but it was tasty.

The thing about Kwik Trip is it’s gas station food. It’s not something gourmet or even fast food quality…but it’s good, it’s cheap, and it’s super convenient. We chose Kwik Trip over fast food several times because there’s such a huge variety and it’s all solid food.

Unfortunately, there are no Kwik Trips in Michigan’s lower peninsula. There are few in the Upper Peninsula closer to Wisconsin but we’re really missing out under the bridge. We’ll just have to keep looking forward to our figure skating trips to Pleasant Prairie to get our Kwik Trip fix.
