Rolling Soul BBQ Joint
Food truck season is back.
The weather is getting nicer…I guess….and it’s that time of year where all the food trucks who packed up for the winter are starting to reappear.
I was in Portage this past Friday for a job assignment. We weren’t really near Westnedge but once we got done with what we were doing, I headed over to Westnedge because I knew one of the food trucks I could never get to last summer has started posting up at it’s usual spot.
The Rolling Soul BBQ Joint typically sets up shop near the corner of Westnedge and Romence Road in the Tuffy Tire and Auto Service Center parking lot. As soon as I got to the corner, I could smell the BBQ and could see the red truck parked up against the building.
I got there around 1:00 and even though they had only been open a couple of hours of that point, I was told they were already running low on some things.
The menu is written on a chalkboard set up on top of a wooden barrel next to the truck. It’s BBQ so it changes pretty much daily and if you don’t get there early enough, they may be out of certain things already. I had a pretty hard time deciding on what to get. I always go right to the brisket at BBQ trucks but they also had Brisket Birria Tacos. And rib tips. All of that was tempting but in the end, I went for the Brisket Sandwich. None of the sides really sounded good to me. They must not have a fryer so no fries and no mac so I just passed on the sides and just got a sandwich. The cost was $12. They didn’t have the credit cards set up yet and I didn’t have enough cash. They gave me an option to Venmo so that’s what I did.
It took a couple of minutes for a bag to be handed to me. When I got to the car, I apologized to my co-worker as he was going to have to smell the BBQ all the way back to the office.
The sandwich is super simple and super delicious. There is a big pile of tender, juicy, salty, peppery brisket on a simple white bun. No sauce trying to hide the flavor. This is pure smokey, delicious brisket. I forget every winter how much I love good BBQ. There are places to get it all year round but nothing seems to be as good as the BBQ food trucks who carry a smoker behind their truck. This thing was so tender and just fell apart as soon as I bit down in to it.
I’m super excited food truck season is back. I miss places like The Rolling Soul all winter. I had a hard time finding them open last summer so I’m glad I was able to get there first thing this spring. The BBQ is really tasty. I love the smokiness you can’t get from a restaurant smoker. This sandwich was good I considered driving back down to Portage for another one.
