Remember last week when I wrote a blog about a Raising Cane’s in Ann Arbor?

I wrote in that blog that I didn’t plan on being in Ann Arbor that day and I actually had a place in Lansing, where I was planning on being, in mind for lunch that day.

A few days later, I headed back to Lansing.  I did my usual thing where I met a co-worker at the carpool lot on Grand River Avenue and I-96 in Grand Ledge.

We went to Novi for a couple of hours for a job then back to Lansing to go our separate ways.

After I dropped her off, I decided to go get the lunch I missed out on the previous week.

King Subs is a a kind of under the radar sub shop not too far from the Capitol Region International Airport on the corner of Grand River Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard on the north side of Lansing.  The building is a really unassuming standalone restaurant with a yellow awning and red roof.   There’s a big parking lot in front of it which makes it easy to get in and out of at a fairly busy intersection.

The layout of the shop is like pretty much any other sub shop. There’s a counter at the back of the shop where meats and cheeses are cut fresh in front of you and a small topping station between the meat slicer and the cash register. The simple menu is hanging on a wooden sign on the back wall.

There’s a fairly large dining room but there aren’t a lot of tables. The cheap restaurant style tables and chairs sit on a white tile floor up against a bright yellow wall with red accents. There’s only about a half dozen tables in a space that could probably hold three times that many.

The menu is pretty simple and very similar to something like Jersey Giant Subs. You get a choice of fresh baked white or wheat bread. It’s the large 16″ size bread that will eventually be cut into four sections before being wrapped up in white butcher paper.

I ordered #13 King Subs which consists of “simply everything.” The meat is cut fresh and piled on top of the bread right in front of you. It’s then passed down the line to the topping station where they have a small list of veggies and sauces to finish the sandwich off.

The “simply everything” on the King Sub is roast beef, pastrami, turkey, ham, salami, capicola, pepperoni, ham, and cheese. I added on lettuce, jalapenos, oil, and vinegar. They gave me the option to toast it and I considered it but I left it untoasted since they say they’re using fresh baked bread. The sandwich is very similar to Jersey Giant Subs and it’s super tasty. There’s a thick layer of meat and cheese topped with a layer of shredded lettuce and a little bit of spiciness from the jalapenos. I ate one chunk of it while standing in the parking lot then just rolled the dice on making a mess by eating the other three pieces on my drive back to Lansing.

King Subs make lists of the best sandwiches in Lansing quite often. I’ve compared them to Jersey Giant a few times in this blog and while they are similar sandwiches, King Subs is slightly cheaper. The cost from the King Sub was a little over $17 whereas The Jersey Devil (all the meats) is about $22. I’d have to have a side-by-side to really compare them. When you boil it down, King Subs is a delicious sandwich. I don’t know if it was there when I lived in Lansing (checks notes) 16 years ago but I had never heard of it and only stumbled across it when I was looking for places to stop when we were in this area last week. I don’t get to this side of town often but it’s definitely one to keep in mind when on the northside of town.
