Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. I met a Grand Rapids colleague in Lansing for a trip to Detroit.

It was much earlier than I typically meet co-workers in Detroit which also means I got home much, much earlier than usual. It was a Saturday and should have been my day off so I was happy I at least got home before the kids went to bed.

We got back to Lansing around 6:30 PM. We typically meet at the carpool lot right off I-96 and Grand River Avenue. I thought about just grabbing dinner at the Hardees at the nearby Loves Travel Center but I kind of wanted pizza.

I chose to head back to Southwest Michigan and grab a pizza on my way home.

Home Slice Pizzeria has been on Grand Street Green Street in downtown Marshall for a little over two years. The pizza joint is in kind of an odd building. It’s a multi-tenant building that you would think had three offices and not a restaurant but at one point in this space’s history, it was a Hungry Howie’s. The other part of the building was home to an after school center but it doesn’t appear there is anything else in the remaining space now.

I put my order in while I was sitting in Lansing. It was a Saturday night so I didn’t know how long it would take them. It was about a forty minute drive but the app said the pizza would be ready in about twenty minutes. I’d rather have it sitting there waiting for me for a few minutes than to get there and it not be ready.

You walk in to the building in a hallway that leads you to the other suites in the building. The pizza places is the first one right inside the door. You walk in, wipe your shoes off, then immediately head through another door to pick up the pizza.

Home Slice Pizzeria is a strictly carryout/delivery pizza joint. There are some chairs to sit and wait if your order isn’t ready but that’s about it. There is a large counter in the middle of the space. The guy who was manning that counter seemed a little overwhelmed by tickets when I walked in. After a few seconds of getting everything sorted out, he asked my name then went to the Cambro next to the cash register and grabbed my two boxes.

I ordered a 12 piece Cheesy Bread and a 14″ Sausage and Pepperoni pizza. The cost for those came out to right around $30.

I ordered the Cheesy Bread so I could eat something right away without making a huge mess. The bread was covered in a very thick layer of golden mozzarella cheese. It was a little hard to see where the pieces were cut so I just kind of started ripping them apart as I stood next to my passenger side door in the parking lot. The bread had a fantastic buttery garlic flavor to it underneath that really thick layer of cheese. I got a cup of Garlic Butter to dip it in but I was trying not to make on a mess on the front of my shirt so I waited until I got home to open that up.

The pizza I ordered was a 14″ thin crust BYO with sausage and pepperoni. The crust was the perfect kind of thin crust pizza. It’s kind of a NY style that is crispy most of the way through and has that really good snap around the outer edges.

I was a little confused at first because it looked like I just got two different kinds of pepperoni but that other circular meat was actually the sausage. It looks like they use thin slices off a sausage log instead of a loose meat pinched type of sausage I was expecting. The flavor of it was fine and it had a lot of crispy goodness around the edges of each slice.

Home Slice Pizzeria has been on my list of places I wanted to stop since it opened in 2023. I haven’t had time to stop to grab a pizza in that time but I passed up a couple of other pizza places in Lansing just to finally get back to this one in Marshall. The sausage kind of threw me off at first but once I realized what it was, I was on board. This is definitely a better pizza than you can get from the chains in Marshall and the kind of pizza place that every small town needs.
