Jersey Giant Subs (Charlotte)
I end up meeting co-workers in Lansing a lot.
I had another job last week that I needed to pick up a Grand Rapids colleague in Lansing before heading to the east side of the state.
It was an afternoon/evening thing so I got the kids to school, took a nap, then got myself up and going around noon to head to our usual meeting spot in Grand Ledge.
Because I took a nap, I didn’t eat before leaving the house. I figured I’d grab something along the way like I usually do.
The last time I stopped along the route, I headed in to downtown Charlotte and picked up a sandwich from Sidestreets Deli & Bakery. As I was heading back to the highway that day, I made a mental note of another sandwich shop not too far off the highway. A favorite sandwich shop of mine.
Jersey Giant Subs in Charlotte is on the corner of Lansing Street and Hall Street on the east side of Charlotte not too far from the I-69 interchange with Lansing Street. The shop is in a small shopping plaza shared with a liquor store on the west side of the intersection. It’s kind of oddly placed so it doesn’t face either of the roads at the intersection but instead is on an angle so it’s accessible from either road.
I have blogged many, many times about Jersey Giant so nothing about this blog should come as much of a surprise.
The restaurant looks a little bit older than the Kalamazoo area locations. There’s a little bit more of a dining room to this location. There are both booths and tables on either side of the entrance. The color palate is pretty neutral here instead of the bold use of reds I’m used to seeing at the newer locations.
The order counter is in the back of the store. It’s set up like every other Jersey Giant and pretty much every other made to order sandwich place. The menu hangs behind the counter and it has the list of what meats and cheeses are on each sandwich. The menu is simple but it also offers up a variety of sandwiches.
I ordered a full #2 The Beasty which comes with ham, roast beef, turkey, and cheese. The meats and cheese are sliced fresh and piled on to the sandwich. Then, like every other sandwich shop, you get the option to add on veggies. The list seemed a little longer to me and it didn’t charge for the hot giardiniera that I have to get on every sandwich. I ended up adding lettuce, pickles, banana peppers, hot giardiniera, and the Jersey juice (oil and red wine vinegar.) The cost of the sandwich was right around $20.
I say this every damn time I order Jersey Giant. I’m going to eat half now and half later. The truth is, I never save half. I eat the whole 16″ sandwich as soon as I get it. Everything about these sandwiches are so good. The fresh baked bread. The fresh cut meats. But it’s the giardiniera that makes the sandwich for me. It’s a Chicago thing. You really have to be from Chicago (which technically, I’m not but…close enough) to understand. I can never stop eating a sub from Jersey Giant. It’s a blessing and a curse. I was hoping to have part of this sandwich left after I wrapped up my job for the evening but I didn’t even make it to the rendezvous point in Grand Ledge before it was gone.
I will always get excited when I spot a Jersey Giant Subs. The first time I had Jersey Giant was way back in 2008 when we first moved to Lansing (this exact same sandwich was only $8 then! and I said that was pricey) and I’ve loved it ever since. I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
