Chick-Fil-A (Westwood)
September has been such a busy month. I haven’t had a single weekend that I’ve been home the whole weekend. We’re still busy skating and now that we have to go out to Wings Event Center, it makes our nights a little longer. The kids like skating at WEC better but Wings West is so much closer to home. It seems like we spend a lot of time on I-94 right now.
Long story short, I haven’t really grocery shopped much this month. We have been piecing together meals with what we have or eating way too much fast food…mostly Jimmy Johns.
There’s also not much food at home for me to take for lunch so I’ve been bad.
I was out on West Main early last week which gives me a lot of options to eat. I decided to go the cheaper route though and stopped at the Chick-Fil-A.
The Chick-Fil-A in the Westwood neighborhood is on the corner of Drake Road and West Main Street. We eat at this Chick-Fil-A all the time but I realized I’ve never been inside. We always do the drive thru which is super convenienent. It’s one of the newer designs with a double drive through and lots of space. This was the second Chick-Fil-A to open in Kalamazoo about four years ago. The first one in the area opened in Portage four years before that. There is now a third location set to open in Comstock Township on Gull Road in the near future.
Chick-Fil-A recognizes their popularity and the stores are set up for long lines. The drive thrus are always super efficient and newer stores are set up to try to keep the traffic off the roads that lead to them.
I was really surprised when I walked in to this store at how the inside is set up for lines as well. There aren’t a lot of parking spots outside but they have a big area to queue up at the order counter that is inside the door and to to the left.
The dining room is to the other direction and is a little nicer than a typical fast food dining room or at the very least, feels a little cleaner than the typical fast food dining room. There are a combination of booths and tables throughout the fairly large space. A lot of the tables have a bouquet of flowers on them adding to that slightly nicer feel.
Like most fast food places, I have my usual order. I usually get the Spicy Chicken sandwich…although I do l really like the nuggets too. I noticed something different this time though.
My order was for the Spicy Pretzel Cheddar Club. This sandwich is the spicy chicken patty I really like from Chick-Fil-A but instead of a standard white bread bun and a couple of pickles, this sandwich comes with cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce and tomato on a pretzel bun. It comes with a side of dijon mustard on the side which I didn’t even notice in my bag until it was too late. The pretzel bun is such a step up to the typical sandwich and made this one more hearty. It’s weird to say but the cheddar and bacon kind of got lost in the dense bread and spiciness from the chicken but I’ll never complain about cheese and bacon on a chicken sandwich.
I got the combo so I also got fries and a Coke. I’m one of those, I guess weird people, that really like Chick-Fil-A’s fries. They’re waffle fries that have a bit of crispiness but are still a little soft and fluffy. There’s a good amount of salt on them as well so I typically eat them without sauce. If you know me, that’s not unusual. I’m not a big sauce guy.
The cost for my meal was right around $13 and I really thin the Pretzel bun added a lot to the meal in the way of making this a hearty, filling meal.
Chick-Fil-A was obviously one of those restaurants that we all got super excited about and went nuts over when the first one opened in Portage. That mania has died down a bit but the Chick-Fil-A’s are still always pretty busy. I stopped on this particular day because I wanted a cheap lunch. We do that a lot. The food is better than greasy hamburgers and it’s not going to break the bank.
