Krispy Krunchy Chicken (Douglas Ave)
My trip to Salt Lake City was super quick. I was in town just about 20 hours before I had to head back to Michigan.
I got back to Grand Rapids a little after midnight Friday morning. I made a stop at Speedway in Wayland for something to eat and got to bed around 1:30 AM back in Kalamazoo.
My alarm went off at 7:30 AM as it usually does on weekdays. I still had to get B up and on the bus then I had a 12 hour work day ahead of me.
I was dragging quite a bit throughout the day. My colleague and I had an assignment out in the northwest part of the city in the afternoon. When we got done, I desperately needed to find something to eat. My plan was just to come back down Douglas Avenue to Main Street then hit downtown Shell station to pick up some chicken.
My plans changed as I was driving down Douglas and saw a new but familiar sign.
The Marathon gas station on the corner of Douglas Avenue and Alamo had a sign for a Krispy Krunchy Chicken. You know how much I like gas station chicken and I’ve been seeing these Krispy Krunchy Chicken’s pop up all over Southwest Michigan. This is the first one I’ve seen in Kalamazoo though but I’ve heard there is a second one on Lake Street.
I’ve been in this gas station a few times but I forgot how big it is and how much extra space there is. The chicken counter is directly across from the door as you walk in. There’s a small kitchen set up behind the usual large chicken warmer filled with chicken pieces. The menu board hangs directly above the counter on several TV screens.
Ordering chicken was kind of a shit show and it had nothing to do with the employees. There were just people everywhere in that store yelling at someone about something. When I walked in, the guy running the chicken counter was trying to put an order together and he was getting yelled at by the customer for picking the wrong pieces of chicken. There were other customers tying up the cash register by just standing there talking and refusing to move out of the way. I just wanted to grab chicken and get back tot he office. We still had work to do.
Eventually, I did get to the front of the line and put in an order for the four piece jumbo tenders Krunch Box. This comes with four tenders, a side, and a biscuit. I also grabbed a Pepsi from the cooler and headed to the main store cash register to pay while the chicken guy was boxing up my meal. The cost came to right around $15.
I grabbed my box of chicken and got out of there.
When we got to the office, I popped the box open and grabbed the chicken first. Krispy Krunchy Chicken’s tenders are usually pretty plump and juicy. That was the case here. The breading is crunchy but not burnt and each piece was pretty soft and tender. I didn’t grab any sauce and these didn’t really need any sauce. I’m always pretty happy to see the sign for Krispy Krunchy Chicken because it usually turns out to be a pretty tasty, satisfying meal. That was the case here as well.
The side I chose was the potato wedges. Again, when these are cooked right, they’re pretty tasty. There is a crispy out layer to the potatoes and a soft, pillowy interior. These were cooked right and had that texture combination. There is a little bit of spice to the wedges which give them a really great taste.
Lastly, the Krunch Box comes with a honey covered biscuit. The biscuit was the only thing in the box that was over cooked. The edges were pretty hard but somehow the middle was still soft and southern biscuit like. The honey makes this biscuit a little bit of a mess to deal with but it’s probably worth the sticky fingers when this biscuit is cooked properly.
This isn’t my first Krispy Krunchy Chicken blog post and it probably won’t be my last. I’m not sure why these are popping up all over the place right now but I’m not mad about it. I love gas station tenders for both the convenience and the price. It’s just an added bonus when the tenders are tasty like these from Krispy Krunchy are.
