Savvy Sliders (Battle Creek)
Days working by myself can be lonely.
It’s just part of the job though. Some days I have a partner. Some days I’m alone.
Wednesday was one of those days I was alone. My usual colleague had the day off. The home office didn’t send one from Grand Rapids. It was fine. My assignment was pretty simple.
I had to be in Battle Creek around noon. I dropped the kids off at Wings Event Center for their morning practice and hung out for a while watching them.
I did my noon assignment in Battle Creek and decided I needed lunch.
I was near the Air National Guard base so I wanted to stay on that side of town. There’s a place that keeps slipping my mind when I’m in Battle Creek but I actually remembered it this day.
Savvy Sliders is on Columbia Avenue west of 20th Street in Battle Creek. This strip mall location has been a Happy’s Pizza for well over a decade and if you’re familiar with Savvy Sliders, that makes sense. Savvy Sliders is part of the Happy’s Pizza chain and they’ve actually rebranded several Happy’s stores in to Savvy Sliders.
The restaurant is set up for counter service but I’d really suggest ordering ahead. There are so many options that it can be overwhelming if you’re standing there in store trying to figure out what you want.
The restaurant is carry-out only. There is no place to sit and eat. There are a couple of benches near the windows to sit and wait for your food but you’ll have to take it somewhere else to eat.
If you want to try a few different sliders, it’s best to order a combo which gets you two sliders, fries and a drink. On the day I ordered, there was a special for three sliders for $10. I did that and made it a combo to get the fries and a drink. The cost was a little over $15 and it was ready for pick up when I got to the store about 15 minutes later.
I started with the fries on my drive back to Kalamazoo. They’re frozen crinkle cut fries that I had dusted with Cajun seasoning. These fries have a bit of a kick to them. They were cooked really crispy on the outside which made them really tasty. It’s not a huge serving size but it’s a good compliment to the box.
I got three sliders in the box. The first one I went for when I go back to the office was the Boomin’ Chicken. This slider is a piece of fried chicken, pickles, and Boom Sauce. The Boom sauce is a ketchup, mayo, Dijon, Worcestershire combo. It’s a little tangy but not over powering. A lot of the flavor comes from the crunchy breading of the fried chicken.
The next slider I grabbed was the Rib-Eye Steakhouse. This slider is shredded rib-eye steak, white American cheddar cheese and mayo. The mayo seemed unnecessary so I left it of. The meat on this was super tender and piled on pretty high. It’s a spin on a cheesesteak sandwich and that’s exactly what it tasted like.
The third slider I got was the The Hangover. This one actually added a dollar to the price of the box because it’s a little extra. The slider is an Angus beef patty, bacon, a fried egg, American cheese and Boom sauce. This was worth the extra buck. It’s a really solid breakfast type burger. The main flavor comes the egg and bacon. The beef patty gets a little lost but you still know it’s there.
When the Kalamazoo Happy’s Pizza closed, I assumed it was for a rebrand like this. You can still order pizza and ribs from Savvy Sliders but all of the branding now is Savvy Sliders.
I’ve had Savvy Sliders one other time in Grand Rapids. I liked it then and I still like it now. It’s not something that’s gonna knock your socks off but it is a really solid, tasty spin on fast food.
